Coaching - Stammers - 08-18-2014 09:18 AM
I'm not sure how much coaching the staff is doing. We aren't holding on to the ball for the last shot on quarter ending possession. Also, IMO, the two Ottawa guards were obviously 100X better going to their right. I would say that they did 90% of the time, but I didn't see any of our guards trying to take away their right hand.
From observing the coaching staff; when they seem to be giving direction the most is by telling players where they should be/should have been on defense. My impression is that they are teaching the basics and not so concerned about situational strategy or making adjustments to fit the opponent.

Yep, and none have seen one minute of any game that has been played.

I am glad to hear they are teaching the basics because most of the kids are not taught the basics while in high school. Like: when rebounding you box out.

No flash cards and the team seems to be playing straight up man all the time. After open threes, players are getting yanked and are being told where they should have been. I have no clue because I haven't talked to the coaches, but I think they seem to be taking the approach to seeing what they have, and stressing defensive principles. There doesn't seem to be much strategy.

For those that don't know, Stammers will be covering the Tigers north of the border games on a full time basis this entire season.

The game was played at a much faster pace than the Carleton game, which made it very difficult to post from my phone. Also, it was more fun to actually watch the game instead of missing the first few seconds of a lot of possessions because I was texting.

Give it time. Strategy and play calling will come once the guys grasp the basics of where they need to be in a vanilla, man defense. A lot of these guys are new to the system and they've had only a handful or actual practices so far.

We have had 10 practices leading up to this game. We only have 8 scholarship players that have played. Nichols is on the trip but hasn't played. Of those that have played, only one guy, Shaq played significant minutes last year. Iverson and King only averaged around 10 minutes a game. We have Pookie, Avery Woodson, Markel Crawford, Hawkins and Magee who have not played in a Tiger uniform prior to the game on Saturday. We also have 4 guys, Kendren Johnson, Austin Nichols, Trahson Burrell and Godfrey who are expected to be significant pieces to our team this year that aren't playing.
You can worry about it if you want but guys coming out of high school and JUCO ranks generally take some time to learn how to play defense properly. It's really just a glorified summer practice where they keep score.

I like it the way it is. See what you have man to man. They have only had 10 practices, all of the players are new, and a lot of the players are missing. See what you have, and get the players used to each other on and off the court.

True, it is like a 'glorified practice' with new rules, scorers and refs.
But the Canadian teams really want to win and show their stuff. We are Memphis. lol. ranked in the top 10.
