Rest in Peace: Dikembe Mutumbo
Taking a moment to memorialize the life of a great man, Dikembe Mutumbo. "Not in my house" and the finger wag only scratches the surface of this wonderful human. Among the many good deeds he did was to build a hospital in his native Congo, which has served many people without regard to their ability to pay.
He also served by more than just writing checks. While being on the board of the Special Olympics, he also worked directly with the athletes, helping them, and making them feel special. He helped mentor many basketball players, both on the court and in life.
Africa is a tough place, and being able to navigate the education system there to be able to qualify for Georgetown is also an accomplishment. Though his dad was part of the education administration there, and that certainly helped, it still required his concerted effort and going beyond what was required and assigned as homework. There is still a shortage of schools in Africa, and given their rapidly rising population, it will continue to be a problem. Some of us BYU fans have been trying to get together the funds and buy-in to start a BYU-Africa, similar to BYU-Hawaii and the Church schools that used to be throughout the Pacific and Mexico. Maybe if any of us personally knew Mutumbo, he could have pushed it through.
Rest in Peace, Dikembe Mutumbo.
