AP: Tara VanDerveer.... winningest basketball coach in NCAA history, announced her retirement Tuesday night after 38 seasons leading the Stanford women’s team and 45 years overall.... VanDerveer surpassed Mike Krzyzewski for the wins record in January. She departs with 1,216 victories at Idaho, Ohio State and Stanford.

Perfectly timed. She goes out on top, and—a la Saban—just before big shifts arrive for both college athletics in general and Stanford's program in particular.

She leaves a distinguished legacy. Her successor at Stanford will start not just a new chapter for this team, but an entirely new volume.

Based on how Hawaii does on the road, I think its going to be brutal on Cal and Stanford's non-rev sports.
