New AAC Commissioner Focused on Being Innovative and Disruptive

I'm interested to hear more details, but it sounds like the new Commissioner is thinking outside the box. Mentioned exploring private equity partnerships as a new funding source and a conference wide NIL model.

Looks to me like he wants a conference sponsor. So instead of being the AAC, you can become the Mercedes Conference or something along those lines. Could be an interesting twist.

I am thinking that it might look something like the soccer leagues or maybe NASCAR with sponsor logos all over the uniforms. It will probably take some time getting accustomed to it.

I am not sure that a uniform full of feminine hygiene product patches will sell many replica jerseys. I can envision some of our opponents calling us the “Kotex Kids”. Bummer.

More so than sponsorships, he is taking about the AAC schools being aspirational and proactive in setting the new model for college athletics and being committed to being part of that group.

This is heading toward revenue sharing, employee status for at least some subset of college athletes, possibly organized at the conference level rather than school level. That is one potential path among many. As to venture capital, the focus on that has been at the P2 level but it probably draws the most interest below that. These schools below the SEC/Big Ten media rights line are likely to need a major infusion of cash to make the transition and have the pool of money necessary to settle all these court cases, insititite payrolls and begin shifting funds away from things like buildings and fancy facilities to the athletes themselves. In some states you might also see big public dollars pushed to athletic department initiatives, especially states were you have former P5 schools potentially being downgrades over things they do not control.
