Yes. The Barbra Streisand effect.

Quote:I think the author played her perfectly.

She played herself, mostly. Her threat to sue made the story read more legalistic in places than the Post probably would have like, but her personality comes through. She's a winner, but at what cost?

It was interesting to read that Louisiana Tech only offered her a three-year contract. I've got to think that moment is the stuff of legend in Ruston, with fans in agony over what could have been. But I think we can infer Tech's side of it: She can be really difficult and unpleasant, and they weren't willing to sign up for five years of that.

Eh, I think Mulkey was crazy like a fox.

Her LSU team has the personnel to beat anyone on a given day, even South Carolina. But they'd been maddeningly inconsistent all season long, and now it's the time where there is no room for error.

Her news conferences appear to have proved a rallying point for her team, and they are in the E8, possibly as a result.

That I think matters to her more than anything related to the Post.

As for her personality, at least as of now, it seems to me that folks in Baton Rouge love her. I do, heck I think she's sexy.

She should send the LA Times a bouquet of roses, they just gift wrapped her and her team some added motivation. Often times, even speeches from great Orators and can grow stale. It's a wonderful gift when supporters of a rival organization give you new material to add fuel to your fire.

"You can criticize coaches all you want," Mulkey said. "That's our business. You can come at us and say you're the worst coach in America. I hate you, I hate everything about you. We expect that. It comes with the territory.

"But the one thing I'm not going to let you do, I'm not going to let you attack young people, and there were some things in this commentary that you should be offended by as women. It was so sexist. It was good versus evil in that game today. Evil? Called us dirty debutantes? Are you kidding me?

"I'm not going to let you talk about 18- to 21-year-old kids in that tone."

The Los Angeles Times removed some of the language, including its reference to "dirty debutantes," later Saturday, saying in a statement that "it did not meet Times editorial standards." The newspaper has not responded to ESPN's request for comment.

"I had someone say the L.A. Times updated, rewrote, did something," Mulkey said Sunday. "That was the extent of it. So I'm not sure what the rewrite was. I'm not sure if it was an apology. I'm not sure of any of that. But personally no one has reached out to me, nor do I require that. I don't need all that. I just like to recognize when I feel something was done inappropriately to young people that I get to coach."

The LA Times edited article: https://www.latimes.com/sports/ucla/stor...l-villains

What is a dirty debutante?!

I'm not sure what it is, but I'm pretty sure I've met a few over the years.

One was Kim Mulkey's male personality twin---Bobby Knight (Ohio St./Indiana). The other two were her opposites.

Dean Smith (Kansas/USC) and Joe B. Hall (UK/UK).

Perfect match. Mulkey and Knight. Two great coaches who are not media friendly. UCLA basketball coach Cori Close is a polar opposite, more like Tom Izzo. She is media friendly and comes off as a very nice lady.

Ben Bolch, the author of the LA Times story, is a UCLA beat writer who covers football and men's basketball primarily. I think he got a bit carried away with the contrast between the two coaches and the teams. He does not usually cover women's basketball and maybe the combination of covering women's basketball and being in Albany, New York was too much for him. He is usually a good writer. UCLA spring football practice starts tomorrow, so he can go back to what he normally covers.

I though that his part of his bio was kind of funny.

"He previously covered UCLA basketball from 2010-11 before going on to cover the NBA and the Clippers for five years. He happily traded in gobs of hotel points and airline miles to return to cover UCLA basketball and football in the summer of 2016."

Ben Bolch of the LA Times apologizes:
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1011...e-comments

"Words matter," he wrote, in part. "As a journalist, no one should know this more than me. Yet I have failed miserably in my choice of words. In my column previewing the LSU-UCLA women's basketball game, I tried to be clever in my phrasing about one team's attitude, using alliteration while not understanding the deeply offensive connotation or associations.

"I also used metaphors that were not appropriate. Our society has had to deal with so many layers of misogyny, racism and negativity that I can now see why the words I used were wrong. It was not my intent to be hurtful, but I now understand that I terribly missed the mark."

Somebody is going to really have to convince me that a journalist is unaware of the political or social implications of the use of any language which has derogatory associations, words with double meaning which imply stereotypes, or fails the grasp the negative connotations or implications of them. That is their profession, which means it was either deliberate and the apology horribly disingenuous, or their employer hired a total incompetent! Either way this guy shouldn't get a pass.

I think that is what he was trying to say. He apologized and that should be enough. He has been with the LA Times for 25 years. I think he will get a pass on this.

Why in the culture climate of Los Angeles should this ever get a pass? It reminds me of the obtuseness of Jimmy the Greek. And Snyder got no second chances.

A lot of things happen in the "culture climate of Los Angeles" that get a pass. I feel confident that UCLA is not going to want him removed from the beat. I personally don't like to see people get fired for a mistake, especially if they apologize. If there was a pattern of him saying racist and misogynistic things then yes, he would get fired. This came out of nowhere. And yes, I thought Jimmy the Greek should have gotten a second chance.

Lost on the public is the understanding that an editor approved it. So, the paper compounded it with the stamp of their complicity.

I thought about that as well. Maybe his editor wanted him to write articles that were more provocative, and it blew up in his face. Who knows.

Why it's a young woman coming out for social debut in an evening gown with a martini in one hand and the olive brine on her dress!

I've certainly never pictured Kim as a debutante! She'd be the one grabbing the crawdads from the mud in the creek for a science class study.

This seems like a great apology. He owned the mistake. He made it clear that he understood why it was a mistake. He acknowledged it was hurtful and seems to understand why.

We all make mistakes. How we respond is a test of our character. Ben Bolch responded well here, it seems to me.
