Spring Practice Guess the Depth!
Spring practice starts the 29th…I think?

Anyone bold enough to predict the QB depth during and at the end of spring? Any bold non QB projections? And anyone think they know the whole depth chart?

My opinion is that the likely starter at QB is on another campus right now…

Why not? This is Hammock’s best team on paper minus a QB. Surprised he didn’t fix it…maybe he likes what he has.

Spring Practice Guess the Depth!
Whatever. I totally lost interest in NIU (and all college) sports. If NIU gets lucky and has some success, the players will get stars in their eyes and will be gone to the portal at the end of the year anyway. Then, it’s starting all over again next year.

I'll be surprised if anyone supplants Hampton until we get into the season. He was the backup last year and is the kind of QB who looks good in practice. Once the games start though, it will be based on performance. If he plays like he has in the past, others will get a shot.

Edit: Just to be clear, I wish nothing but the best for the kid. I hope he's great.

"NIU will begin holding spring practices on March 26 and practice 15 times in five weeks, concluding with the spring showcase on April 27 at Huskie Stadium."

That's how I see it unfolding. Hampton knows the play book, makes solid throws in proactive, wins the job by default....and then is very average when real play begins and Hammock is going to need to find a spark from someone else to get the offense going.

I'm rooting for this - biased because the I'm blinded by watching Jordan Lynch in college but family of winners. Don't trust the staff to design a gameplan that incorporates short passes and isn't just 100% QB & RB runs so not holding my breath it actually happens.

Out of the others in the room, the only one that really excited me were the few clips I saw of Jalen Macon from his time at Pine Bluff, a big, somewhat mobile QB with a big arm entices me. Feel like we know what Hampton is at this point.

Often 6 QBs on the spring roster, Hampton has a slight advantage now as #1, Jordan and Holst are in the back of the field, with the JC, the transfer and Nevan bunched up slightly behind Hampton right now. Not sure who is best one will be, Hampton makes me nervous. Hoping, hoping someone else WINS the job like Purdy did with the 49ers.

The kid from Idaho wins the job is my guess. I have no faith in the offense changing from what is was last year with run,run short pass that is less than enough to move the sticks and then punt.

I’m willing to give the new OC a chance. Give him a full offseason.

All joking aside I don’t think Justin moves from RB.

I think Hampton, and everyone, probably has a fair shake. It will come down to ball security.

I think Justin stays at RB and will be a gadget type player. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him lineup as a pass catching option. Rat dog type but probably more athletic. He could be a weapon if used correctly and even a few throws in a game here and there.

I'm putting my money on Lueth as the starting QB. I bet we don't find out who the starting QB is until the first snap vs Western.

Spring Practice Guess the Depth!
Hampton goes into Spring ball as the lead contender because he knows the offense and is able to make the plays in practice. That said, the depth chart, in my opinion, is what to watch because Hampton will be on a short leash on game day. I expect Leuth to end up being the starter just like Hare when he was in a three-way competition. We'll see a few QBs this season until we find one that can consistently moves the chains and not turn the ball over. (For the past couple of years, I expected a turnover nearly every time our QB had the ball in his hands. A QB that doesn't regularly turn the ball over is a huge commodity in our offense at this point.)

If you have three you have none. Hopefully one stands out from others. If a QB is on a short leash, that is not good. Hard to perform if looking over your shoulder to be yanked.

If Ethan Hampton hasn't figured it out after 4 years in the program he never will. Hopefully he has progressed (since the 2022 season), can stay healthy (a big problem for him), and has gotten better at not turning over the ball.

I think they should play more than one QB in the first game vs WIU to figure out who is best.

I hope they don’t have to. I hope someone balls out.

Kenny Lueth has some muscle!
