Who would be ideal Commissioner for a Breakaway League
I was just watching today's Dan Patrick Show. He was interviewing Mike Krzyzewski, and it got me thinking about things that K and Saban have said recently about problems with the NCAA, NIL, kind of everything that we're going through right now.

Who would be the bet Commissioner for a breakaway league. Leaving out number of schools, 40/80/120/whatever, just who should be the person to lead us into the future? I'm interested to see what everyone thinks.

edit: I listed Krzyzewski, Saban, the 4 current P4 Commissioners, and "other". I meant to list the former Commissioner of the Pac 12, the great George Kliavkoff, but I ran out of room in my poll.

Also, why did you list Jim Phillips (unless you think he's gonna need a new job in the very near future)?

Phillips is highly respected in B1G circles, at least he used to be, and his league is not a threat to either of the P2. He would be a reasonable consensus choice, probably more likely than either Sankey or Petitti. I listed Yormark for similar reasons, he's been extremely good for the Big 12 and would likely do a similarly good job if he was running the entire Breakaway.

Coach K or Saban might be better just b/c either would command the entire room every time he walked in the door. In a meeting, in front of Congress, it doesn't matter, they're both consummate Winners and huge Celebrities who could use their powers for Good for a change, and they'd both likely take the job if offered.

RE: Who would be ideal Commissioner for a Breakaway League
I think it would be someone *like* Tony Pettiti (but not specifically him or any of the other commissioners). Definitely not a coach for sure. A breakaway effectively requires someone that is *not* an old like college sports name or has any baggage or preconceived notions from the past. Someone that understands both media and labor law/negotiations would be a must. That’s really the profile of all of the commissioners of the 4 major US pro sports leagues. A breakaway occurring is full-blown “this is a mercenary business” mode - traditional college thinkers need not apply.

Other - FSU AD Michael Alford. Him and the FSU prez are up to the task of getting things done. Plus, I don’t they are happy with the ACC pie of the playoffs, so they got the motivation.

Sounds like Brett Yormark before he joined the Big 12.

Fake Dan Beebe used to have some good stuff on twitter. Nowadays it looks more mean than funny though.

I think i'm voting other- David St. Can't believe I didn't think of that one.

RE: Who would be ideal Commissioner for a Breakaway League
Gonna throw a bit of a curveball here with other - Oliver Luck: dude has a suprisingly long and diverse resume in both the college and pro sports worlds:

- former WVU and NFL QB
- UT Law grad w a fellowship in Germany
- first GM of the Frankfurt Galaxy in WFL, then GM of Rhein fire after league restarted before being named president of NFL Europe
- CEO of Houston sports authority when they built Minute Maid Park, NRG Field, Toyota Center
- first president of Houston Dynamo and help get a publicly funded stadium built
- AD and BoG member of WVU when they moved to the Big XII and got a new baseball stadium built
- NCAA EVP of Regulatory Affairs
- XFL (2020) commissioner
- Current Exec Director of UAC
- consultant for WSU and OSU on potential PAC-2 expansion/strategy

If nothing else, this guy may have the most well-rounded resume of anyone in major American sports, and a particular specialization in start-ups and institutions in transition.

I think Tom Jurich would be an awesome commissioner and that is who I voted in "others."

Might feel better about Luck's career trajectory if Executive Director of the "United" Athletic "Conference" was the first thing on his résumé and not his current job
