I'll never forget when he killed Omaha's championship wrestling team and very competitive football program.
The football program lost a lot of money but the wrestling team? I mean that was a nice marketing play they could use even if it did cost them money and he just up and closed shop on them. That was very head scratching.
Still. I generally liked Alberts and thought he would be here a long time. I figured he was at Omaha that long because he was waiting for UNL to open up.
Guessing there are some behind the scenes things going on here.

The pipeline continues to flow, huh? How did Dollar Bill Byrne work out down there?
*edit* Lots of blame being pointed at the regents since Nebraska's only had an interim president and no chancellor for several months now. Trev stated he liked the vision and leadership at A&M, which isn't exactly a stable program, either. In November he got an extension that doubled his salary. Either he got tired of reporting to empty desks or something happened behind the scenes that really got under his skin.

Just wait until Trev Alberts hires Matt Rhule as the next A&M football coach.

Looks like it wasn't about the money for Alberts as much as that he just had a ton of respect for Ted Carter and, for whatever reason, the BoR has spent 7 months without finding a replacement for Carter. Carter was guaranteed to be paid in the top 3 of all B1G ADs until 2031. Here's what the Nebraska Governor had to say about this:
"It has been 206 days since Ted Carter announced his departure as president," Pillen said. "It is unacceptable that the University's elected leaders have failed during this time to appoint permanent leadership. It is imperative that they act urgently and decisively to end this uncertainty. Without any delay, they should support Interim President Chris Kabourek's efforts to immediately appoint a new permanent athletic director."

What isn't stable about A&M's Athletic Dept? Bjork left for the Ohio St job. Woodward left for the same job at LSU, his alma mater. We have $200m athletic budgets, and every AD who has left in the past 20 years has either retired (Byrne and Hyman) or went to another Big Program (Woodward and Bjork). This isn't the football team, the AD doesn't have final say on anything big enough that he might get fired down the road if the coach doesn't work out, his job is to raise big $$ and Alberts has proven that he can do that.
One of the things I caught in that ESPN article is that Alberts reported directly to Carter instead of the campus Chancellor, perhaps Nebraska was planning to alter that reporting structure, or perhaps it was just up in the air for so dang long that he got tired of waiting for a resolution.
He fled an unstable situation for one that is very stable.
