RE: 2024 Mid American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
Toledo is 8/19 from the FT line ? And like 0/5 in 2nd half ?

That is why Kent State is winning for sure

An entire season of disappointment and frustration wiped away with a huge win knocking off the #1 seed and now have a favorable 2nd round matchup to try and get to the final.

Got to love college basketball

HUGE WIN! Rollins had a fantastic game. That was solid defense. The absence of Bass was also really helpful. We had our fair share of blunders at the end, didn't need any more.

Congratulations on the great win. Went "old school" with the impressive inside scoring instead of relying on the three-point shooting. VCD is now officially a beast. Reminds me a bit of Antonio Gates.

Got to admit Toledo gift wrapped that game to us. My goodness, what a choke job, and I don’t say that flippantly. What else can you can you call it? Too much pressure trying to end their MAC tourney jinx.
But that said, our bigs came up huge today, especially VCD, of course, who’s become a beast around the basket. Our guards made some plays, but they also helped keep Toledo in the game more than they should have been.

Not sure if the 40+ years without a championship weighs on today's players. If anything, beating Kent State twice by about 15 caused them to not being able to get in the right frame of mind early. You know, I just had a strong feeling they would pull the upset. Of course I didn't bet on it. But then again had I bet I would have jinxed them.

It would be tough for any team to win the way Toledo shot it. 22-56 from the floor,
5-17 from the 3 and 10-21 from the line. I wasn't able to see the game, so I don't know how much of the poor shooting was due to Kent State's defense, but obviously the shooting from the charity stripe is all on the Rockets.

I think VCD may have felt snubbed at 3rd string MAC

Mike Bekelja was HUGE today. 37 minutes, 2 huge three point goals and hustle plays galore on the boards and on defense.

Looking forward to tomorrow's semifinal.

GO FLASHES!

4 years in a row Rockets could not get it done, after winning
regular season .
Coach could be packing his bags. Toledo fans cannot be happy

Kent clearly came to play today with a plan.
Kudos to our kids and coaches

Has an 8 seed ever beaten a 1 seed in this tournament before? If it’s happened, I don’t remember it.

Good call on “Bass’s absence being helpful.” Agree completely. Young man plays out of control. I had high expectations for him but now I doubt he’ll even be with us next season.

RE: 2024 Mid American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
I would not call this a 'choke job' by Toledo since it sort of trashes the job Kent State did, players and coaches.

1) The gameplan was solid, and EXACTLY the same Kent used to beat UT three times last season. Patient offense-tough physical defense.

2) Yes, Toledo missed 10 FTs (that's 10 pts) but Sullinger was 0-7 on threes. It evens out. If he makes 3-threes that's nine points. But he missed 7, that's 21 friggin points.

3) Call me crazy but if Kent had lost this game I don't know what I would have said about Gio. And I'm not talking about his missed FTs. The potential play of the game (up 59-53 - off a timeout - with :41 to play) was Gio's sloppy off-target inbounds pass to a wide-open Sullinger off a back-cut for a clear layup, became a contested shot at the rim by a UT defender who had time to recover and block the shot. GREAT PLAY-CALL by Sendy. Brutal execution.

UT went on to score (59-55) and immediately fouled Kent's worst FT shooter (Hornbeak) who made the first but missed the second. But Kent's Bejelka then got the loose ball rebound and Sullinger closed the game out at the line. Near disaster averted.

I agree about not liking the word "choke". The article on the game pointed out what changes Kent State made and that the Toledo coach chose not to change things up. Unless an outstanding team is playing an awful team, anything can happen in any given game. Favored teams lose all the time. That's why they play the games. If I had a dollar for every time I saw an underdog win in my many decades, I'd be rich. It just wasn't Toledo's day, that's all. It doesn't detract from their regular season. And also today #1 seed Richmond lost to a #9 seed - St. Joseph's.
