That's the number being floated as "God Tier" in college football. Do we make that cut?

Agreed … unfortunately …. Perception unfortunately is the reality of the P5 decision makers …

RE: 64
To me, what will be interesting to see is what happens when the SEC and B1G start throwing out their dead weight programs because they bring no appreciable value to the conference and are keeping the big dogs from getting enough of what they’re “due.” Don’t sing the “but they are original members” BS, because they have already shown they don’t give a crap about tradition or historical rivalries with the moves they have pulled recently.

We will not be in the “64 club,” but there will eventually be a lot of good teams out with us. I’m still going to pull for my school team, no matter what level they end up in.

I believe you are spot on and I agree. I will always root for any Tiger team in any sport against all.

Of course not. We wouldn't make the cut if it was 84.

Depends.
If they open it up to programs (to avoid anti-trust litigation) who are willing to make the commitment necessary, we have said we will.
If they pick the programs (and win the inevitable lawsuits) then no.
If you started from scratch with the 64 programs with the most potential, then probably.

This year, there were 69 P5 (+ Notre Dame) programs. Not sure about next year. I think it drops to 68 with Oregon St and Wash St relegated, and SMU moving up.

So, yeah, if 64 is the magic number and the powers get to decide, some of those programs get kicked out. I would bet it would be our former colleagues - UCF, Houston, Cincy, SMU - before it would be a Miss St, Vandy, Rutgers, etc.

I think what you'll see is two mega-conferences (the Big 10 and the SEC) and then two other mega-conferences (the Big XII and the ACC)-- and that will be the cut. The Big 10 and SEC will have more seats at the table, but the other Big XII and ACC will at least have a seat. Our best bet is to get into the ACC.

I now honestly don't think the ACC survives. They are staring at a PAC 12 situation. The SEC, the BIG, ESPN ad Fox are about to determine the future of college sports for better or worse. They alone will pick who gets a seat at the big table and its just tough luck for everyone else. Not only will we not make that cut some in the ACC and Big 12 are not going to make it either. Now will there be a way to earn or buy your way into the top league? That's the big question going forward.

There is a difference though, between the ACC current state and the PAC-12 death spiral: The PAC was in the middle of negotiating a new TV deal and couldn't get what they were wanting, and then the rats started leaving the sinking ship. The ACC is locked into their TV contract with ESPN for what - the next 10-11 years? They already have what the PAC was shooting for, although in the grand scheme of things it may not be as big as the SEC and B1G deals for a while.

I think that is about to get blown apart by the one party that can, ESPN.

This.

Might as well renovate Halle or Crump with that money from the state. Maybe host some 1-AA playoff games there because that’s what we’ll wind up being

Believe whatever you want but we won’t be playing in any major conf and certainly not in a group of 64 d1 teams.

But neither will a bunch of other teams that have been eating at that trough and will be getting kicked to the curb. We’ll be among them now, reunited with some of them that got the call up but not going further (kinda’ like what happened to us when we got in the Big East and they pulled the rug from under us). Above 1-AA, but not at the top. The middle level. IIWII.

Maybe so. I just don’t think they will kick anyone in the p4 out. Gotta have some bottom of the barrel teams to slap around. Plus, would be lawsuits out the a$$. It’s one thing to tell 30-40 teams in the MWC, the MAC and AAC to go jump. Quite another to tell Vandy or BC or Northwestern
