JMU vs Marshall 3/9 2030 EST
Big game tomorrow! Tip off may be pushed back being late gate. Dukes handle this game. Ready for next game.

I think this win will secure us an at large. Maybe one more?

RE: JMU vs Marshall 3/9 2030 EST
JMU favored by 11.5 or 12.5 depending on the book you use. Over/Under 153.5. Implied score Dukes win ~82-70.

First Meeting in Harrisonburg in Jan:
Game was tight in the first half with the Dukes leading by 3 at the break. JMU then went on a 19-5 run to start the second half and that was your ballgame as the Dukes locked down defensively. JMU forced 14 turnovers in the game.

Three pointers: Neither team shot the ball well from distance. Marshall was 8/34 and the Dukes were 5/23.

Second Meeting in Huntington in Feb:
Game was relatively close late in first half with JMU up 24-21. Then Greene hit a big 3 followed by Wooden hitting two 3’s and a putback to put JMU up 12 at the half. That was all she wrote as I don’t believe Marshall ever got within 10 the rest of the game. JMU forced 15 turnovers in the game.

Three pointers: Marshall shot 4/30 from 3. They were firing early and often with little success. JMU was a very efficient and effective 13/23 with Noah and Wooden each hitting four a piece.

Of note:
Game got a little chippy at times. End of 1st half there were double technicals as Randleman and Crawford got tangled. Then there was the borderline dirty screen that Martin set on Brown late in game that injured Brown.

Also, Anochili-Killen for Marshall only played 11 minutes in this game even though he wasn’t in foul trouble. He averages over 30 min a game. I think he got benched for two bad threes late in first half and game flow being down so much in 2nd half.

Keys to game today:
First and foremost when facing a D’Antoni style offense is guarding the three. Whether it’s Dan or Mike, the brothers love free flowing, up tempo, pick and roll, and shoot the three. JMU will need to defend the three. Marshall was a combined 12/68 (17%) from three in the first two meetings. Hard to imagine they will shoot that poorly again, especially after shooting almost 50% (14/29) on Thu night vs fake GSU (Curfman hit 9). That being said, JMU is top 5 in the country at defending the three with opponents only shooting 28%. (Interestingly, Georgia State is 15th in the country yet got torched by Marshall on Thu).

Second, this is tournament ball. It will probably be more physical with less foul calls. Marshall will probably try to get under JMU’s skin with Martin most likely leading the way.

Third, JMU will need to be unselfish. We’ve seen them play their best basketball this year when they lock down defensively and move the ball on offense.

Finally, turnovers. JMU forced a total of 29 turnovers in the first two games. Combine that with the poor three point shooting from Marshall and you have blowout city in both games.

(The above is sponsored by my kid waking me up at 5am so apologies if any errors)

There was nothing “borderline” about the dirty play on Brown. Hope the refs call a good game.

I actually hope they call a tighter game. The felonious assault that has passed for defense in some games has been ridiculous.

That's the first time we've gone down and passed the ball around. Something we must do to win.

Just feed Carey and Bickerstaff until Marshall proves they can stop them.

JMU seems to have these moments of sloppiness that allows teams to get back into the game. Hopefully the break will stop the issues.

Looking good with the defensive intensity and a nice working margin at halftime.

Often generated by Edwards playing hero ball.

Yup
No idea, we’re trying.
Seems streaming from a phone is best option at this point?

We played hero ball for most of that first half. Only a few times did we go down and unselfishly pass the ball around until it landed on an open man. More times than not, one man got to dribbling the ball around until he finally forced a shot, fortunately, they we going in for the most part.
