I don’t even know, first thoughts…

-ESPN SMU game day
-Winning AAC conference game against UC - football
-Lynch win against Ole Miss and BYU
-Winning NIT convincingly against Miss State - hoops
-Beating Houston for the conference title in hoops
-Penny recruiting Precious, Nolley, Duren, Kendrick, DeAndre, Quinerly, Lester, Tomlin, David Jones……

Winning the NIT is like taking your 3rd choice to the prom. She also happens to be your fat 1st cousin.

We can only presume that you didn't even watch that game bc it was pointless?

Just when I thought we didn't have enough childish fans

Gameday on Beale
Cotton Bowl
Winning AAC Championship Game
Beating #1 Houston to win AAC conference tournament
Ole Miss win with Lynch
Liberty Bowl win against Iowa State

Winning NIT was just a reminder of an opportunity lost; as are good recruiting classes that do not result in conference titles & tournament wins.

Good lord dude. We get it. You hate Penny and think he's going to somehow destroy Tiger basketball. You and Nascar Guy can go to a dirt track and entertain each other with stories about how much Penny sucks. Fact is he inherited a program on life support after Tubby and still somehow managed to bring in high major recruits and make the tournament. If you're pissed it hasn't been more successful then I get it but damn, you'd think we have a losing record and signing 1* star guys. There's no way you can argue that the program is in worse shape then it was when he took it over.

2 players & a great coach can rebuild a basketball program.

Says who? You? Who is this mystery coach and that a) has that much success recruiting and coaching and b) would take the Memphis job?

It's a great question that he's going to avoid answering. Show me the coach and 2 players he's going to bring to Memphis and carry us to the S16 the first year.

Yeah. To have a Liberty Bowl exhibition game win (against a team with a ton of players sitting out), above the first NCAA tourney win in 8 years (and then going on to take the best team in the country down to the wire) speaks volumes.

Our basketball program is truly in the dumps if a 1st round win over #8 seed Boise & a close 2nd round loss is an athletic department high point over the past decade.

You seem to have zero perspective.
Considering that we hadn't won a NCAA tourney game in 8 years, and the program had been driven off the rails by the 2 previous coaches, it was a highlight moment.
A much bigger moment than winning a non-CFP bowl game where the other team was without 10 starters.

I don't see you with much perspective either. Lose that bowl game and how much sh!t would we be seeing on this board or in the media about it? It may have been only 8 years since a tourney win for the basketball program, but how long has the football program suffered before the university finally started paying attention to it and addressing it? We have had a history of spotty success in the basketball program over the long haul, but football, not so much until the last ten years or so...

If it had been 8 years, then half of that time would have been on Penny’s watch, considering Tubby was only here for 2 seasons, & Pastner was canned because of his last 2.

Exactly. A steady build from the ditch during Penny's first few years including our first NCAA win in 8 years. Then this year went off the rails. But can't deny what he inheritied and where he's progressed it until now.

I'm a football fan as much as a basketball fan. No football-only or basketball-only here. Memphis alum, resident, and fan.
I love what Fuente, Norvell, Rudd, and Bowen did to get football built-up. And there have been some big moments - gameday, conference championship, Cotton Bowl.
But no way is a Liberty Bowl win over a hapless Iowa State team on the list of top moments of the decade.

My point is simply this: I had rather win an acknowledged, long-time bowl game against a P5 team than a made-for-ESPN content "Me-maw's Fried Chicken Bowl" against Podunk U. ISU may have had holdouts, but so did we. But ISU showed up and they wanted to win the game, and we took it from them. The exposure for the program and the University was a bonus from this type of game versus a content filling game for ESPN. Is it as big as going to the Cotton Bowl? No, but it was another chance to make our program visible in a positive light. It's my opinion, and you are welcome to yours. That's what message boards are for.

Back to the original point that you commented on...It wasn't comparing the LB win to the Boca Raton Bowl win...It was saying the Liberty Bowl win was one of the best achievements of the decade - while the first NCAA tourney win in 8 years is not even on the list.
any NCAA tourney win > any bowl win outside of the NY6 bowls
