MWC TV Deal Notes:
CBS Sports Network is the Mountain West’s primary TV rights holder. [CBS also televises ten games of each sport per year (FB & MBB), including the Men’s Basketball Championship.]

The deal also includes Fox (as they replaced ESPN) as its secondary partner. Fox gains exclusive rights to Boise State home football games and to the Mountain West Football Championship game, while it will also carry a full slate of football and men’s basketball games (T2 & T3) each year across its linear platforms (FS1 & FS2).

There is really only 1 plausible scenario: Pac12 Network!

That's not really an answer though. Pac 12 Network always had distribution challenges, but on August 1 or so it goes dark.

Quote:They (Pac-12 Network) should signs a sub-licensing agreement with Apple, Amazon, CBS, or CW.

The question is, who wants the OSU/WSU games, whether direct ftom the PAC 2, from OSU & WSU as true independents, or from a Pac 12 Network sublicense.

Quote:The conference needs its home football games to be widely, and easily, accessible. Ideally, the inventory would be spread across content delivery:PAC12 Networks & cable channel via sub license.

Nobody cares what the conference NEEDS. Networks care what the conference can DO for their TV package.

**

Good catch about the Apple Cup being a Big Ten TV game. I'm not sure-- it was a Washington home game last year (2023), it's a Washington State home game next year (2025).

RE: What network will OSU and Wazzu play their home games on?
The answer is whatever regional network in Oregon and Washington that will run them. The CW seems the most viable candidate with sufficient coverage in Oregon and Washington if the local affiliates agree (station by station agreement).

One assumes they will sell the non-local feed to the visiting school's provider, either local TV, and to MWC schools to CBSSN or FSN2 or better channel if the game turns out to be important. But this is pretty much the norm in the industry. San Jose State playing in Corvallis will likely get picked up by the local affiliate in the Bay Area for example. Purdue playing in Corvallis will no doubt see that game carried on the BTN.

Digital feed could be run on ESPN+ or some other network.

None of these are big money earners. But they might generate some money, while helping to pay the rent for the San Ramon facilities. I imagine they will operate with the skeletal staff that remains, along with some contractors on an as needed basis.

Football, Men's Basketball and also Oregon State Baseball will be the key coverage. Likely only a smattering of Women's Basketball and likely not much else will get aired, even digitally.

It is a neutral site game at Lumen Field in Seattle. No one is considered the home team, but if the Huskies are playing a game in Seattle in a stadium that can hold around 70,000 fans, I am guessing that it will feel and sound like a Huskie home game.

Right—but who controls the tv rights?

This is an interesting question. Everything in Washington's new schedule rotation indicates that the 2024 game against WSU was supposed to be a Washington home game.

Wash plays 4 Big Ten home games in and 5 Big Ten road games in 2024
Wash plays 5 Big Ten home games and 4 Big Ten road games in 2025.
Wash plays at WSU in 2025.

So everything indicates going forward the way the rotation in now set up for Wash, this was supposed to be a Wash home in 2024. The only problem is that Washington was also the home team in 2023 against WSU. So the old rotation is getting flipped. So the neutral site game in 2024 must have been a compromise because under the old rotation, this was supposed to be WSU's year to host.

This does not answer the original question about who controls the TV rights. But it does indicate that truly this is considered a neutral site game where the TV rights aare not controlled by 1 team only. I would guess both teams have to agree on the TV provider as part of the neutral site agreement.

Us peasants will not know for sure until TV schedules are announced for Oregon State, Washington State. Or maybe if the Big Ten announces first, listing the Apple Cup as a Big Ten OOC home game.

We might find out once the Pac-2 gets their media deal done. The game is being played in Week 3 and there are not a lot of terrific power conference matchups in Week 3. Oregon at Oregon State and Washington vs Washington State in Seattle are two of the better matchups for Week 3. Two rivalry games in Week 3 should be entertaining.

If both teams were still in the Pac-12, the game would have been played in Pullman. The 2023 game was in Seattle on the Huskies homefield. They put together a five-game schedule that runs through 2028 and the first game is a neutral site game. They share the revenue from the game. Next year is in Pullman, the following year in Seattle. My prediction is that the game will end up on the ESPN Family of Networks.

The CW, Amazon Prime, ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU/ESPN+ seem like decent alternatives unless they can continue on with some form of PAC-12 Network.

RE: What network will OSU and Wazzu play their home games on?
Partial answer. OSU and WSU are required to produce 100+ Olympic events (Basketball, Soccer, etc) for the WCC as affiliates for ESPN+ and whatever distributions the WCC has (they do have games on Comcast where I live in the SF Bay Area). It seems this s a large chunk of what the Pac-12 Network facilities will be used in 2024-25 to produce this content. The lease in San Ramon appears to run for another year. After that, who knows?

Any chance that the Pac2 Network will air WCC games not involving Wash St and Ore St?

Air them where? At the end of June or July they stop being carried on cable systems.

(03-02-2024 11:17 AM)johnbragg Wrote:  First up, the CW. They have "shelf space", I think. They can program WSU / OSU football games after their mid-afternoon NASCAR Xfinity races. (This week's race is booked for 2.5 hours on FS1, I'm assuming that they're all 2.5 hours). That would put their ACC games at noon, mostly. I *think* that works.

So CW could definitely show Washington STate or Oregon State football on Saturdays from 6:00-9:30.

8/31 Oregon STate, Washington STate FCS games.
9/7. Texas Tech @ WSU
9/14 Oregon @ OSU, and/or Washington-WSU in Seattle. CW Doubleheader?
9/21 Purdue @ Oregon STate
9/28 No game
10/5 Colorado State @ Oregon State
10/12 No game
10/19 UNLV @ Oregon STate and/or Hawaii @ WSU
10/26 No game
11/2 No game
11/9 SJSU @ Oregon STate and/or UTah STate @ WSU
11/16 No game
11/23 Washington STate @ Oregon STate
11/30 Wyoming @ Washington STate

Nexstar makes some amount of money off of local news broadcasts at 10:00 or 11:00. I don't think they'd be doing doubleheaders except for the Oregon and Washington games.

Does the CW split the package with a streamer? IS anyone open to that sort of partnership? And if they are, are they open to it at this (low) level?

OK, something I just noticed--the CW - NASCAR Xfinity contract doesn't start until 2025. So there is PLENTY of room on the CW to show the ACC games and the PAC-2 games. Sept 14 could be back-to-back-to-back ACC/Civil War/ Apple Cup.

Also October 18 and November 9, where both OSU and WSU have home games.

Great situation for OSU and WSU. They get their games on OTA CW with high quality PACN production and likely good kickoff times with an ACC lead in.

All the other former PAC schools will be kicking off at 11PM, buried behind a paywall, and produced with garbage ESPN 480p feeds.
