On the one hand, this is a sad, sorry schedule. It's basically a G5 schedule.

On the other hand, it is a far more valid schedule in a geographic and cultural sense than any schedule that their former PAC compadres will be playing next year, save probably for Wazzoo. It's a great west coast schedule, the kind they should be playing.

This will be interesting for Oregon State. They lost ground in recruiting, which is more a problem down the road a year or two than next year, but reasonably held their own in the transfer portal getting back roughly similar to what they lost. This is a Mountain West schedule but does include a road game against Cal (who were trending up and playing good football) and home games with rival Oregon and Purdue. If the coaching doesn't fall off too much with the change over, this team has a good chance to win 9 games. For a fan it's a good road schedule with games in the SF Bay Area, San Diego, Reno and Colorado Springs (you can stay in Denver, which is only an hour or so away). Early season against Oregon is probably hopeless and on the road against Cal after playing a bunch of G5 schools is probably a trap. But I think they can win almost all the other games.

Washington State was clobbered in the transfer portal, losing P4 level players and getting G5 and FCS transfers in return. A 5-7 or 6-6 season would not surprise me. There are a number of factors that suggest the Cougars will fall down to MWC level much quicker than the Beavers.

I've been waiting to see who will air Oregon State and Washington State home games this season.

I'm guessing ESPN tries to do P-2 After Dark or CW throws money at them to pair with the ACC.

OSU has a chance to do some brand building for themselves, they could be a consistent playoff team with this type of schedule and there are some good games on it. Every game does not need to be a P4 opponent, you need some easier games to pile up the wins and it makes those P4 games seem bigger due to scarcity. I wish OSU and WSU well.

They'll be battling Washington State for the abandoned cup.

P5 is forever, because it's 5 named autonomous conferences.

ACC and Big XII could get Pac-12-ified and there'd still be a P5.

Semantic point, but this is a bit different than the AAC's "P6" gambit.

On short notice? This is a great schedule! Reminds me of BYU's early indy schedules. But with time, BYU was able to average, I believe, 6-7 P5 schools a year. Just give it a minute. I think WSU/OSU might end up scheduling each other + mostly home-and-homes with P4 schools in their nonconference to effectively get 5 "P5" games per year, in addition to their slate of 7 other MWC games. That won't be bad.

It is a great west coast schedule, and they will be treated as a power conference school for playoff money purposes for the next two years. They lost a lot of players to the transfer portal, so this is a proper schedule for where they are at. Seven home games, with Oregon and Purdue in back-to-back home games. They have one road game in the first six weeks of the season, at San Diego State. They have time to see if they can find a power conference home for football and if not, they rebuild the conference with the top G5 schools available.

Yes, which is why I think they should have scheduled WSU as the last game of the season to replace the War on I-5 (in reality the War on OR 99).
