Mike Jones played for ODU 92-95. Our Mike Jones was long time powerhouse DeMartha coach, who was replaced by a different Mike Jones. To come in and replace Coach Jones back at ODU.

I think this choice makes total sense. Time will tell if it’s a good hire, but he should be able to recruit.

Morale is high. Might not be a slam dunk out of the park hire, but it's one that I personally think looks good on the face of things. Mike Jones was a standout player at ODU, scoring 1166 points in his tenure here with 2 trips to the NCAA tournament in his 4 years as a student athlete. He has a ton of connections and is a well respected coach in the DMV area from his high school coaching days. I think his strong suit is going to be recruiting, the question is has he cut his teeth enough on coaching? He was a renowned High School coach of a high quality HS (the high school named the court after him), coached and won three golds with the Team USA junior national team, as well as a gold medal at the U16 FIBA team. But he's only had three years as an assistant (2 at Virginia Tech and 1 at Maryland) as his experience in Division 1 coaching, and we don't know what capacity he was coaching (was he an on-the-court coach, or more of a recruiter?)

I think he brings a lot of good pieces to the table, especially in this recruiting heavy NIL/Transfer Portal environment we are in right now. I'm skeptical about his X/O's, but the man has been around and coaching basketball in a lot of different situations so him being able to handle D1 is not out of reach. I would call this type of hire one with a very low floor but also a very high ceiling for its potential.

This is no ordinary high school coach friend, anyways he has been a P5 assistant for the last three seasons

Even ODU Athletics gets it. I’m old and lame apparently, I’ll have to tell my daughter she was right.

No HC experience in college is a bit concerning as this is a total rebuild.

That being said, he knows the school/area and clearly can recruit.

Need ODU to get back to their usual hoops ways for the SBC to improve.

Brad Stevens (Butler) did so good he got a job in the NBA (Celtics).
Shaka Smart (VCU) did so good he got a job at U of Texas.
Jeff Capel III (VCU) did so good he got a job at U of Oklahoma.

Those are 3 very successful college coaches off the top of my head that didn't have any HC experience in college before they were made a HC in college.

He coached DeMatha High School, a perennial DMV powerhouse. Not the South Carolina Sisters of the Poor, like D"Antoni.
