I DONt understand when the other teams have a guard who can score over 30 points on us and we never put a player on him all game long ,,i think it happen over 3 times this year ,,,mc state , fau and yesterday ,,,wtf
Watch any game involving Tylor Perry.
AK didn’t even put quan jackson on him. Travesty. One of the best on ball defenders UAB’s had.

People say we’re too negative and ish like this happens. Multiple times. Over multiple years. With multiple iterations of players. Same coach.
Onto the next one.

RE: Wichita State Shockers
We go from one year where we had a lot of emotional players to another year where there is no leader or emotion, but I did like how Yax decided to take things in his own hands at the end, but we just fell short.
We need to get Yax a nice NIL deal pronto. Why are Bham business so allergic to giving UAB players NIL deals??
Jelly was the Player of the Year, Yax could also match Jelly's Newcomer and Player of the Year award. He is walking double-double.
I'm sure we have an NIL liaison at UAB but they need to do better.

The loss wasn't from lack of effort. But there were clear matchup issues going on. UAB couldn't guard Wichita off the dribble, Wichita couldn't match up with UAB's bigs defensively. Game turned when Yax and JD got into foul trouble. That was a huge advantage for Shockers for about a 20 minute stretch where they came back from down 7 and stretched the lead to 19. UAB made the comeback when Yax and JD could be on the floor together again with about 10 minutes to go.
Wichita is a lot better than their record. They should not have 17 losses with the talent they have on the roster. They have lost a lot of close games, many of them very similar to last night where it got away from them late. They might be a team no top seed wants to see in their first game in Texas.

At some point in the second half, Gaines played great defense on Colby Rogers and shut him down on a play. Otherwise it was the Colby Rogers show as he hit for a season high 29 points.
In the first half it was the Rogers and Vasquez show, but Vasquez cooled off and finished 5-13 in two pointers.
Lendeborg took over in the last ten minutes. His intensity was off the chart. However, he got so hyped up that he missed three consecutive free throws. He usually swishes his free throws with perfect form.
Butta didn’t shoot well last night, and looked off to me.
Another disappointing loss. Memphis is next, and they have won five of their last seven games.

We’ve lost to a lot of those better than their record teams over the last 3 years…
Would be nice if UAB under AK took every team seriously and didn’t take games off.

They didn’t take that game off and took them seriously. Did you even watch the game?

RE: Wichita State Shockers
We tried to live or die by Vasquez while Yax was out of the game with 2 fouls. Nobody else(Gaines, JD, Butta) stepped up to try and assert themselves. Seemed like going through the motions on the offensive end for the most part. Why in game 28 did we finally try and get AJ that much involved? He had a solid 1st half but even then you could feel the game slipping away and could see WSU was comfortable allowing him to get his instead of the usual suspects. In that, instead of getting 57% chance at baskets down low from JD(who only had 5 shots). Instead you get AJ going 7-17, cooling off. Butta going 2-8, EG 0-5.
Coleman only had two shot attempts as well. We never did force it to our bigs. Not until Yax came in and managed his way through the foul issue in 2nd half. We got him the ball outside and took them off the dribble to the basket. He had some transition points. And even demanded it in the post 2-3 times, knowing he’d get his own board.

RE: Wichita State Shockers
Wichita gameplan with their personnel was clearly to take away Butta, UAB gameplan anticipated that and intended to leverage the physical mismatch of Vasquez. You think it was coincidence Irvine tweeted to expect a breakout game from Vasquez?
UAB was pounding the ball inside early and then kicking to Vasquez off that. That worked very well until the foul trouble.
Coleman isn't a post player on offense. His shots come on cleaning up trash, cuts to the basket, transition or mid-range in the high post.
UAB offense struggled when the post presence was on the bench. Wichita has better perimeter scorers and defenders than UAB. From 10 minutes in until 10 minutes to go, they had BETTER personnel for the game circumstances, and they made shots (or really, one guy did and that opened the floor for others). UAB is not a good on-ball defensive team, and Wichita is one of the best off-the-bounce perimeter offensive teams in the league no matter what their record is. The counter to that is the trap, but the way UAB typlcally runs it, you have to be hitting shots to set it up.
Funny how that works. Gee, Yax and JD go back in, UAB starts hitting some shots, they get into the trap, comeback on and game starts to look like it did in the first 10 minutes.
Not hard to figure out man.
There is very little difference between the 14 teams in this league. Matchups and circumstances matter a lot.

RE: Wichita State Shockers
Your bread and butter is paint points and rebounding. Hard to do that if you aren’t pressing the issue. I can understand that Coleman is probably too raw and slim to play the post game, but you want him down low. Use that length for rebounding. It’s hard to get paint touches with your bigs hanging out in mid range. We let all 3 do it at times.
Anyhow, hopefully, we recruit a true big or 2. Unless they feel like they can work some magic with shaver.

UAB is No. 24 in the country, and No. 2 in the AAC behind SMU, in offensive rebound percentage.
