Thoughts on a remolded ACC
There has been a lot of talk about schools leaving the ACC for the B1G and SEC. Me and a friend were eating lunch the other day and discussing all of the Realignment. We came up with an idea.

If you take all the public universities from the ACC, and after discussions with both the B1G and the SEC, allow those schools to be poached (for lack of a better word) by the B1G or the SEC (dependent on those conferences wanting all of the public schools). Then take the private universities and the military academies and build a new ACC conference to replace the old ACC. You could wind up with a decent conference.

If a public school does not get invited to the SEC or the B1G, there will be the Big 12 that could use some backfilling because of some private schools leaving. ESPN could split the NEW ACC with FOX just as they do the Big 12.

The schools in the new conference could look something like this:

Air Force
Army
Baylor
Boston College
Brigham Young
Duke
Miami
Navy
Northwestern
Notre Dame (part-time in Football like with the current ACC)
Rice
SMU
Stanford
Syracuse
TCU
Tulane
Tulsa
Vanderbilt
Wake Forest

Now, before I get flamed, I know that some of these school could possible wind up in the P2, but this is just for fun - right?
Any ideas, or any schools I may have forgotten?

RE: Thoughts on a remolded ACC
I don’t see the ACC as a catch all for private schools in a P2 era.

I think they end up with 12 of their existing schools left and all but Louisville fits the model of being either an elite private or elite public.

I think there is an impetus to bring in USF (AAU) to keep a Florida presence.

I also think there could be support for Tulane (AAU) if they continue to perform well in football and UConn (state flagship with basketball pedigree).

That’s the direction I see them going.

Schools like Vanderbilt and Northwestern aren’t going to give up what they currently have and Baylor and TCU are content where they are.

Except that...

1. No network is adding Rice to a deal. Rice is the FBS version of Georgetown football, with a better stadium.
2. Georgia Tech and Miami are more valuable to the Big 12 than a rump ACC.

Temple is likely excluded. Miami seems like an almost lock for a P2 bid. That would bring this list to 11. Add in South Florida for 12.

I've been an advocate of something like this for a next-generation ACC. Create a 'boutique league' for smaller schools, specialty schools, and private schools. The schools have special needs anyway and the new court rulings are going to give these schools some special challenges. I think such a league enables appealing matchups. I think people will watch those games. The B12 can be the truck-stop league and play off of this ACC as a 'snob' foil in its ads. 'Hate' abounds. Play ball.

The concern I have about seeing it happen is that it seems ND would need to stay with the ACC to anchor this. Jack Swarbrick has definitely said some things through the years that are very encouraging of such an idea. But if current rumours are true, ND might have different plans.

What do you think? Could this project be done if it lacks ND's media clout to help it along?

True, without ND there would be a serious drop in “clout”. Could it be done? Yes, but it would be more difficult. I think ND, Miami and Duke are the three schools this would need to have to succeed. Otherwise it is just another American or Sunbelt.
I think the lineup in the original post could be a formidable league in all sports.

+1

This seems a group that may build institutional cohesion.
