Can we honestly say they did not have an insider information? After all they were talking as well to Fox and if the B1G with its comment "they would have gone to the SEC if not us" is to be believe maybe even ESPN.
I think the scare tossed into FOX and the Big 10 was that USC was out shopping an independent deal like Notre Dame had. Can you imagine if right after snagging Texas and Oklahoma, ESPN had signed USC to a Notre Dame affiliation with the ACC? Crap meet Fan! Warren would have been massively burned. So, when FOX got reports USC was looking, they lit a fire under Warren to get to work. That's likely how and why UCLA snuck in ahead of UW. USC used its leverage to secure Los Angeles away from the PAC figuring it would be a kill shot and make their leaving even easier, especially UCLA's. The 4 schools the Big 10 took were 4 of the top 5 earners with ASU being the other. So, with 4 schools they took about half of the value out of the PAC 12. With Texas and Oklahoma the SEC took 56% of the Big 12's value and obviously their top two revenue producers.
This is why with the ACC things are difficult. If you want to decapitate the value of the conference you would take F.S.U., Clemson, Louisville, Virginia Tech. If you take their top 4 revenue producers it would be FSU, Duke, Miami and Clemson. If you take their 4 strongest brands it would be FSU, Clemson, North Carolina and Duke. ESPN would be interested in the top 4 in value and the top 4 in brand. The SEC would be interested in the top 4 earners. Where's the compromise?
It's pretty clear to me ESPN will want to hold onto FSU. They are in all 3 groups. Clemson is too, like it or not. North Carolina simply delivers the best market, but they are going to want Virginia when Virginia Tech is the better add.
But the principle is the same. If you want a P2 then when you raid the ACC make sure these schools are taken: Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Miami, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech. Take or disperse those 7 and its over, right?. With those gone maybe the Irish don't stick around....or maybe they do now that Stanford and Cal would join Pitt, B.C., Syracuse, Louisville, or Georgia Tech and SMU, with USF coming on board.
The ACC is last because it is comprised of 3 different functioning groups and now the addition of a 4th plus SMU. Taking them down is a Jenga puzzle
Just curious about the OUT being 56% of the value of the Big 12. Are you saying that if they stayed, the Big 12 media deal would have come in at over $65 million before CFP and Tourney credit disbursements? Wouldn't that be more than the SEC and B1G?
No. I'm implying the Big 12 is lucky their revenue didn't drop off the table. Being a useful tool to assimilate PAC schools likely kept them elevated in pay. Plus, anything placed in the B12 is shared by ESPN and FOX. So, they have a purpose which is a good place to be. And for the record, Yormark gets a lot of crap around this board, but the man's willingness to work with ESPN and FOX and accomodate some of their desires has played a large role in the Big 12's continued success with the contracted amount.
If Phillips becomes compliant, I can see the growth of the SEC by 2, a solidification of the ACC's position, and a resultant P4 where the gap in revenue, while wide, is not an insurmountable obstacle for the Big 12 and ACC. The SEC and Big 10 would be at 18, the ACC at 16 plus ND, and the Big 12 at 16.
I agree with everything you say, but want a follow up on your second sentence. The Big 12 conference media deal was negotiated before the 4C were invited. Are you implying that Disney and Fox bloated their payout with the plan in place to lure the 4 C and break apart the PAC before Oregon and Washington bolted? They were still a viable conference at that point.
Implications are funny things aren't they. What are the odds that between FOX and ESPN, remember FOX did not make an offer on the PAC 12, that the two of them, likely knowing who each PAC school was negotiating with and what was being offered, would not act in their own self interest? In the end what happened? FOX got some key exclusive PAC properties at half shares, and ESPN picked up 2, one kind of important to Notre Dame, for virtually nothing. And they get to split the 4 corners.
That's some mighty fine pickings for two buzzards and a mighty convenient roadkill, huh?
And one other thing, no school move for nothing. So, what does that tell you about Stanford, California and S.M.U.? There were some promises made of which we are not aware. Maybe they needed to be grouped for easier movement elsewhere when things behind the scenes now are worked out. Maybe they are to be slipping into the roles and paychecks of 3 departing schools, or maybe a new conference is going to be built around them. But they didn't move for nothing.
