It's not (necessarily) disdain. They're not a natural (or any other kind of) rival for Liberty or probably anyone else in the conference. But the whole point here is what you said - that this isn't any kind of deal-breaker either (at least not for Liberty).
I think we're saying the same thing.
Exactly.
It's not disdain toward FIU at all. It's purely geographical: They are WAY down in South Florida. I mean, if you just look at neighboring states, you'd think Alabama, Georgia, and Florida schools would be elated to be in a pod, division, or other grouping with such nearby opponents.
But the distance from JSU/KSU to FIU is roughly equivalent to our distance from the University of Delaware or Sam Houston State. (700-something miles.)
Putting JSU and/or KSU in a travel group with FIU would be like putting SHSU in a travel group with UTEP and NMSU. Sure, it's only a state or two. But man, what a state...
And ultimately, any grouping not designed purely to foster/continue a rivalry has one purpose: to ease travel, either for the school or (less likely) for the fans. Otherwise, you might as well not have any groupings at all. Just schedule the teams as best as you can to get a good sampling of relative strength, and send the top two teams to the championship game.
And that's honestly where we're ending up. The only difference is (actual) rivalry games -- NMSU/UTEP, WKU/MTSU, JSU/KSU, perhaps another one or two, depending how expansion goes -- will hopefully be protected. Everything else will be up to the CUSA scheduling committee.
