Where are you seeing 50% or just being hyperbolic on purpose? 10-20% is more likely.

Also, going to be a whole lot of public colleges out of business too (see Radford and Longwood). Perfect time to convert those campuses into retirement communities as the 65+ population booms.

I was being hyperbolic but the most recent generation is far smaller than any previously. I agree that a whole lot of colleges are gonna take the impact, but schools across the board will be affected- including jmu

All schools will be dealing with a smaller pool of college-bound HS students, however, only some colleges/universities will not be successful in meeting their recruiting targets. I seriously doubt JMU will be on the losing end of recruiting numbers, and in fact, the overall enrollment numbers at JMU may see a small increase.

Everything is yet to be scene, but most schools are seeing a small bump right now as students who put off school during Covid start enrolling.

The only schools projected to not be hit are Ivies and Public Flagships, neither of which JMU is currently. If the school can use the athletic excitement to increase student quality (ie become more selective), then maybe it can grow enrollment or keep it steady.

But this is why JMU is tearing down and rebuilding dorms, versus building the replica dorm next to Paul Jennings. Don't overgrow right now and be stuck with empty dorms if enrollment shrinks (even by 1k).

I gotta think that JMU could grow to 25k quickly, if they chose to and had the $$ to do it (plus extra support from the state). Apps are way up and as others said, sports is huge - kick me, but we really need more dudes

As for Jennings twin..in time, isn't there just greater demand for dorms on the old side of campus? It will end up being a net increase in rooms...those new village dorms are double the number of beds in six buildings (down from...8?)

Hillside has got to go...there could actually be a nice little quad ovr there with the student union as an anchor and Mr Chips 03-wink

Good grief.

JMU is not “tearing down and rebuilding dorms” because of concerns about current or future enrollment trends. Dorm replacement (and expansion) has been part and parcel of JMU’s well managed and reasoned master plan.

Additionally, JMU’s increase in applications puts the lie to the idea that only Ivies and Flagships are safe from being impacted by the demographics of fewer HS students seeking college admission. There are “non-Ivy, non-Flagship” institutions whose profiles place them in advantageous positions where they will not only maintain, but they may possibly even increase their current enrollments. JMU is one of those special institutions.

Bottom line, I am 100% certain JMU will continue to meet its enrollment targets over the next decade, and dorm replacements will continue as planned.

Only problem is that Hillside field is a flood plain. (If you've ever been around for one of the big thunderstorms in the summer, you'll have seen it - quite a sight)

Last time I looked at the numbers for redoing the village, I was a little underwhelmed by the increase in capacity overall - there were 9 village dorms at 216 beds each = 1944. 6 of the new dorms will be 2754 beds, so about a 50% increase. That's nothing to sneeze at, but it's also a lot of time, $ and loss of existing capacity for the gain. I guess we'll see.

RE: JMU admissions applications are way up
JMU only guarantees Freshman a dorm room. Taking an educated guess I'm thinking we can accommodate roughly 10K students with beds. There's zero danger of building too many dorms. We could lose 25% of our enrollment (which is not going to happen) and still not be able to house everyone.

Like the stock market, we may have a little correction, but twenty-five years from now, JMU will be bumping up against 30k.

Love the bullish thinking here...and totally agree that we gotta grow (and maintain the ratio for student/teacher)... here's the thing - all the SCHEV and JMU paperwork and planning has us steady at 22k until 2026 (or so)...

somewhere in the JMU plan docs, there is a percentage of about 35% being on campus housing based on enrollment projection of about 23,500

I say 100%. If the decision is a done deal then you're just getting extra exposure to a new place. If the decision isn't final yet, Choices might lock it up.

CHOICES definitely locked it up. We placed the deposit before we left campus that day. So, thank you for the advice.

For context, she picked JMU over NC St., VT, Univ. of FL., Univ. of S. Car., and Alabama.

After CHOICES, she said she couldn't see herself anywhere else next year.

Seeing a lot of local west end kids taking JMU over VT. Nice change from recent history.

Choices definitely helped. not sure I am there yet with my son, but his mom and I are on board!

It is well done and worth the time.

At the AUBc
- high energy from the moment you walk in
- friendly / happy greeters
- the band is blaring away
- great videos on the video board
- dynamic speakers
- if you are an alum, definitely tugging at the emotions, for shore --

then - very good breakout sessions along the majors.

lunch was packed and a bit of a cluster, but got through it.

My only advice, the more current student participation the better. Great kids. Well spoken, happy, balanced. Would have helped to have them talk about what they like about JMU and why JMU. Some did, but more would have been better.

Definitely agree on AUBC atmosphere. It helped kick off the day after a rain soaked drive down to JMU. It was nice that the rain broke while we were in there. By the end of the day, it was bright blue skies over Harrisonburg. We never even needed to use the shuttles all day. Of course, it helped that we knew our way around campus.

Curious about which breakout sessions you attended. We went first to the Honors College session which was great. The students there did an amazing job selling JMU and the Honors College.

Then we cut back across campus to the College of Integrated Science and Engineering Open House. That started at 9:30 I believe and ran until 11:15. We arrived around 10:50 and I think it had died down by then. My daughter was able to talk to the head of the CS Department one-on-one for about 15 minutes. Dr. Simmons really had an impact and did a great job selling the program.

Then we stopped by Shenandoah Hall to take a look at the dorm.

After that, we did lunch at E-Hall around 11:40 taking Top Dawg's sage advice to eat early. It wasn't too bad arriving, but by the time we left I could see how you'd consider it a cluster.

After lunch, we walked around East Campus a bit and then went to the CS breakout session. I'm not a STEM person and didn't really understand much of the technical points of the presentation, but they let five or six students speak. They all spoke well and were definitely dynamic and engaging. I'd say this was the one that sealed the deal for my daughter. We went to a similar presentation at UVA Engineering Open House last year and after, my daughter walked away with no intention of applying to UVA. Underwhelming to say the least. She did one at VT in the fall and she said that one was better than UVA's but it obviously didn't sell her on it.

We rounded out the day at the Study Abroad breakout. Understandably, there wasn't much about how great JMU is as the students talked about their experiences abroad.

Closed the day out with a trip to the bookstore and handing over the deposit check at UREC. She was smiling ear-to-ear after that.

Best of luck to you as you navigate this process!

Happy to read that your Choices experience helped your daughter see & feel the true nature of JMU…the JMU we all love and admire. 04-cheers

From using the AUBC as a staging event, to breakouts with the Honor’s College, Engineering, East Campus dining and dorms…there’s just so much that defines the JMU of 2024 that didn’t exist 30 years ago, however the essence and spirit remains the same. JMU is >>>> UVA & VT. 02-13-banana

we spent most of the day with the Health Sciences departments. The student panel was great and the kids were impressive and passionate about JMU.

While the AUBC general session had half the arena filled, the breakout sessions were 50-100 and were manageable. Again, well done by JMU.

Hopefully we are turning the tide against maroon and orange. I spoke to a couple of kids weighing both

I graduated JMU in 2017 and went into healthcare/professional school. If that’s what your son is interested in can’t recommend JMU enough. Happy to answer any questions y’all might have
