His best team started pre-season #8 and got rolled by Western Kentucky in the first round, Penny's last year.
Well Vaughn's going out for the season in the 1st game was a big part of that. The other is that we had 0 depth.. thats why Cincy beat us by 31 in the Elite 8 the year before... with Hardaway in foul trouble we werent fielding a top 50 team.
We had no depth because Finch didn’t trust Marcus Nolan after he took that last shot vs DePaul
I remember we had two big name recruits to replace Madlock... Anthony Goldwire and Covington Cormier (sp?) but we had to settle on Sidney Coles. I remember after we lost Vaughn, sometime midseason we got labeled Penny and the puppets. Some opposing coach said take Penny off the team and we were basically S. Miss. ouch
Well the next year we did have a losing record
Yea, I was always one that thought Finch was just a horrible coach. We were heading that direction until Penny and Vaughn came along anyway. I think we had under 20 wins in both of EPs final two seasons.... only 1 NCAA win in his entire career... and then to lose the final game in the Mid South Coliseum to Arkansas State of all teams. We had 3 McAAs on that 94 team plus a freshman Chris Garner. Zero excuse to have a losing record

He was nearly fired in 91 but had Penny and Vaughn waiting in the wings. And in 94 he had Lorenzen coming in, but by 97 he lost Harris and that bunch and it was over

Ok, I was wrong.
Have never seen a team completely implode like this in 13 days. Some good stories will come out of this season in time. But for now, maybe time to start the coaching search

Today was a quad 2 loss. You won’t find many teams without a q2 loss. You actually will find a lot of the top 50 teams with a q3 loss. Kansas took one yesterday. Kentucky lost at home to UNCW (maybe Greensboro, don’t remember). We’ve won a bunch of close games and now lost a couple. FT shooting bit us somewhat today. So did not having Walton available in 2nd. I actually think we win if he plays instead of Jayden. We lost to USF mainly because we shot 2/15 from 3 in 2nd half and our 2 best players missed key FTs. Back to back losses where we had a 3 to win at buzzer. Both games were against teams 100-140 net. Not devastating as far as metrics go
Penny will get this figured out. There is too much talent and experience in that locker room not to so so. We still have some quad 1 (FAU twice, @ SMU) and quad 2 (@UNT, maybe Charlotte) opportunities plus Fort Worth. You don’t win 10 in a row by getting lucky. Not against 2 SEC, 2 ACC teams with 3 being ranked plus a quad 1 at home vs SMU.
Sit back. Chill. Drink a bunch of beers. Eat a gummy. Relax. Tiger hoops is what we all love. It’s a bump in the road, but by the end of the season, we’ll be rolling again. Already showed some of what we are capable of in non conf. We’ve lost 2 games by a total of 3 points. Maybe that’s part of what gets frustrating with Penny. We play up and beat the Houston’s and Alabamas and auburns, but then we lose games like today. The talent is there. Just got to refocus.
Still think this is a sweet 16 or better team. It’s mid Jan and everyone has some head scratchers
Have to win conference tournament to make dance and sweet sixteen.

Really? We can't find a way to beat the worse team in the conference at home.. It's over.

The only 2 teams I can think of collapsing like this would be the Heels last year who I think started at #1 and missed the tournament and this years Philadelphia Eagles who went 10-1 and lost in 1st round.

I remember the Tigers getting their heads handed to them in a road game in the twilight of Tubby ball and they were all sitting on the bench laughing and having a good time. They did not give a crap about losing if Tubby was the coach.

It's a mess right now - no doubt about it.
But you're foolish with the Penny getting fired narrative.

95-96 team went from playing for the number 1 ranking vs UMass to losing to Drexel in the first round. But that team was actually a 5 seed. Nothing will top the disasters of 1994 and 1997 though

Yea, it was unfortunate too what happened to Vaughn. When he came back in 94, he wasnt 10% the player he was in 92. Obviously Deuce Ford was a massive disappointment too, but still no excuse to have a losing record with that team

So you believe our team will get their act together some way and get into the NCAA tournament? I hope you’re right but we currently look like a team spiraling out of control rather than one gelling together. I don’t know that Penny has it in him to be the leader who inspires everyone to pull together. As it now appears, we will only win games where we grossly out-talent the other team, assuming the other team doesn’t know how to play as a team either.

We grossly out-talented Rice. Not sure that’s a good barometer.
