A lot of bad degrees exist.
Therefore we need to add another one.
Stop.

Football coaches would totally abuse that.
This. You would have 4 years of Film Study, which would coincidentally be film on all your upcoming opponents. Then you would have 4 years of Playbook Reading, your playbook. Four years of Offensive Execution or Defensive Execution (taught by your position coach or coordinator).

Aren't there enough worthless degree fields football players are pushed into? How many Kinesiology majors are on the average D1 football squad?

RE: Football should be a degree major.
1. If a football degree meets the Western standard for a liberal arts education as implemented by all of our universities, I don't see any reason why the major-specific dressing of football would make it any less legitimate than pretty much any other degree. Will Shortz (NYT crossword guy) got his degree at IU in Enigmatology (the study of puzzles). Degrees don't have to be relevant. (Ironically, Shortz "used his degree.") I'm not saying it's a good idea to get a "useless" degree, but the use isn't really the point, and I think others are spot-on in comparing football to, say, arts-based fields. College isn't about learning a trade, although it's really nice that the two often go hand in hand.
2. Minor note: I wouldn't pick on social science(s). A well-designed curriculum should broadly prepare someone for real-world intelligent functioning and contribution as much as most majors. For statistical analyses, I would probably trust a bright psychology major more than a good student in the natural sciences. It definitely has its limits (I'm probably a good example...got a psychology bachelor's but went to grad school in biology, and that's what I "use" now), but it isn't a meaningless topic. Program by program, of course, YMMV.

I know a D1 starting QB that is driving a delivery truck because his degree in Social Science is worthless.
What are your thoughts?
And he’d be differently employed if he had a degree in football?
Maybe he’s just a dumb***.

Seriously, if he wanted a job in Coaching or Administration then he should have majored in Sports Management or Education. If he wanted to Coach at the college level, you go for your Masters and get hired as a GA in the Athletic Department and move up. ****... just get a degree in Business or Marketing if your undecided. You can get hired just about anywhere with those degrees.
