Rivalry with Buffalo
Has there ever been an attempt to initiate a rivalry between KSU & UB? KSU is the closest school to UB in the MAC, and KSU is also the most eastern school in the conference aside from UB. I know Akron will always be the number one rivalry, however, it seems like both schools are missing out on an opportunity to start something really special. Additionally, both teams have played very close, exciting games over the years in both football and basketball. Thoughts from other fans?

RE: Rivalry with Buffalo
How does one go about “initiating a rivalry” outside of playing who is on your schedule? Rivalries appear to be organic and are typically based on proximity. When you’re over 200 miles away and not even from the bordering state it’s hard to define the rivalry on proximity regardless if you’re the closest MAC school to them or not. Kent State and Akron will always be a rival, regardless of records each school with get up for that game like no other, they’re so close that the schools recruit against each other for the players, the players may even be playing pickup ball against each other in the off-season, they’re chasing the same girls and going to the same clubs/parties and the fans are living in the same communities and working with each other. Nobody in the MAC has any of that with Buffalo, and despite the many great games over the years you just can’t feign a rivalry.

I’ve always felt that KSU and UB have a good basketball rivalry. Some great games at Alumni, the MAC Center and in Cleveland over the last decade.

True, but as Polish Hammer noted, you can't initiate a rivalry. The only true rivalry is with Akron. Of course, it always seemed that games against the other MAC teams in Ohio meant just a little more than with the out-of-state MAC schools.

RE: Rivalry with Buffalo
Anybody can be short term rivals if they are battling for championships. Once that ends so does the rivalry. Browns/Giants in the 50s, Cavs/warriors, Indians/Yankees etc. I think the Bulls/Flashes had one of those. But without geography it ends. It works both ways. Guardians/Tigers have been playing each other for 123 years and since the years where they were both good are so few nothing has really developed.

Besides Kent is joining the Mountain West in 2027 and Buffalo the Sun Belt in 2026 so that would end it anyway.

I DECLARE A RIVALRY! Bulls more like Calves. Your city is named after an animal and you choose a different but similar animal as a mascot? LAME. Your shade of blue is a bad shade of blue. Ours is better.

There. It has been initiated.

Awesome! Now it can never be said somebody didn't attempt to initiate this rivalry, just waiting on the two UB fans to respond to kick this up a notch. 04-cheers

When driving through New York State you should use the same rule as you would when hiking in a national park. If you see a "Buffalo" don't approach it. One could gore you to death the other could bore you to death.

How can you declare a rivalry when you just went bankrupt?

I agree with Burden about the "short term" rivalries. Those come and go. I'm not sure just how many real, long-term, continuous rivalries there are. And they require the two teams to be reasonably competitive against each other.

Well I meant more or less creating publicity/hyping the games more than the usual conference game. Perhaps creating a trophy like OU-Miami, Ball State-Miami, UT-Toledo, Akron-KSU. There seems to be a lot of similarities and history between Western NY and NE Ohio....Perhaps play up that.

Wait, did I declare bankruptcy? Or did Buffalo? Because if it was them then we got something here. We love having rivalries with broke @$$ schools. Just ask Food Stamp U down in Summit County.

Buffalo never lived in New York. It would be like naming a city Rhinoceros Ohio.

The SUNY at Buffalo is, of course, named for the city. The city got its name from the Buffalo River. The river got its name from early settlers who claimed that there were lots of buffalo there. Whether there really were buffalo, though is highly disputed.

So the first Buffalonians are believed by historians to either be liars or too dumb to identify a Buffalo. That actually makes a lot of sense.

Quote: The origin of the place-name is in dispute, as buffalo (bison) did not inhabit the area; it may reflect a mispronunciation of the French beau fleuve (“beautiful river”), in reference to the local Buffalo Creek.
