RIP.

As best as I can figure, Joe Namath is now the oldest living QB for a Super Bowl champion team (or NFL champs prior to the Super Bowl). Namath is 80.

Isn't Stauback a year or two older than Namath? Remember he had two serve to years in the Navy after graduating before entering the NFL.

I remember when Frank brought his son Pancho to Rice for a campus visit. They came to Will Rice College because Jim Castañeda knew Ryan. Castañeda asked me to show Pancho around, but I must not have done a good job, because he ended up at Dartmouth.

My Dad was friends with Frank at Rice and used to fondly tell the story of answering the phone at the end of the hall one time. It was Sid Gillman calling to talk to Frank to ask him if he would play (vs joining the "real world") if the Rams drafted him in the upcoming draft. Dad (Chem Eng) frequently studied with Frank so he knew where he would be and tracked him down. The rest is history!

I seem to remember that Frank wound up spending most of his time after football in the NE. Especially New England. I’m sure you did a good job with Pancho. He probably just wanted to stay close to home.

Dr. Ryan and his wife, Joan, were classmates and good friends of my parents. As a young football fan, I remember getting such a thrill when we would get Christmas cards from them while Frank was playing for the Browns. Much later I was lucky enough to spend time with them socially and at Rice events in NYC in the 80's and 90's. Such a very special man.

He lived in our neighborhood in CT for a couple years when I was like 7-8 and would watch our endless street football games and talk to us when coming or going. We thought it was cool that he was Yale AD, the Brown or Rice or being a a generally brilliant person were years away even though my dad explained it to me endlessly.

Thank you for that, Loki. Great article.
I’m wondering if the local/ national sports coverage might pick up on this story, considering the Texans and Browns play this weekend.
