ACC / Big 12 Merger
A discussion with Drake Toll of Locked on The Big 12 and Kenton Gibbs of Locked on The ACC discuss the rumors surrounding the FSU and The ACC along with a possible ACC Big 12 merger.

Toll is a Baylor guy and Kenton Gibbs is a NC State guy.

RE: ACC / Big 12 Merger
In principle I would not mind it at all if we could get back to geography that makes sense and reunite some rivalries. Perhaps there could be divisions of 5-6 that could all share revenue with each other and not with the whole conference. We could also group the snobs together in their own insulated bubble.

RE: ACC / Big 12 Merger
Drake Tool is a moron, but a merger isn't a terrible idea. It would lend itself to four geographic divisions, more or less.

I agree merging the ACC and Big 12 might be the best long term strategy. We might be still 5-7 years away

It might be the ONLY long term strategy.

And there could be worse things to happen.

BUT ...

I am for "running out the clock" strategy --- keep things as intact as possible to 2036, and hope that by then, the new 32 team playoff will make conference consolidation unnecessary.

RE: ACC / Big 12 Merger
Nah.

I like some B12 schools but not all of them. The ACC presidents would never vote for a merge with the B12.

It seems like the merge idea was originally from WVU fan base and they quickly dropped that once FSU filed a lawsuit. If the ACC prevails, I expect they would float that idea again.

RE: ACC / Big 12 Merger
I think it’s a great idea.

Step 1: merge the big 12 into the ACC
Step 2: Add San Diego State and Gonzaga or Oregon state
Step 3: break into 4 divisions of 9
Step 4: petition to run each division as a stand alone conference with its own tournaments. The other option is to have 2 divisions of 18 and run them as basically 2 leagues with their own tournaments. In either case, Football would have 2 “title” games with each winner getting an auto bid to the playoffs

If this is accurate, who wouldn't want to merge w/ Iowa State, tho.

No. The rumor started from a few ACC fans but Big 12 and ACC fans sniffed that out. Neither conference benefits from that, especially the Big 12.

Run the merged B12 and ACC league like NFL with two conferences.

I like a nine team division of:

UVA, V tech, UNC, Duke, NC State, Wake, Clemson, Ga Tech, FSU

Hoops play 16 games h/a among division members
Football play 8 games h/a among division members

Correct. No eastern university wants to be in the Big XII, including Cincinnati

RE: ACC / Big 12 Merger
FWIW: Baylor, Texas Tech and TCU have kept SMU out of the Truckstop Conference for years. SMU has played traditional rival TCU for years but the old SWC matchups with Tech and Baylor just don’t happen anymore despite how popular they’d be with the fan bases.
I’d love to see the ACC get Kansas, Utah, Tulane and perhaps Arizona.
It would be interesting to see how SMU would vote on the Texas teams.

This has a lot of merit… if the media deal was cooperative Kansas, Utah, Tulane, Arizona.. would be better aligned with ACC THAN BIG 12 ..
