RE: RIP Eric Montross
Montross was a quality player. Very steady and consistent. I always enjoyed watching him play in the 1990s. He was from Indianapolis and the Indiana Hoosier program recruited him hard (IIRC).

Only 52. Tragic. May his memory always live and may his family and friends heal.

Hard to believe that it has been more than 30 years since he helped UNC win the 1993 NCAA title.

RIP

I remember him more for his NBA days than college. As a matter of fact, I don't remember his college days at all, I wasn't a serious college fan outside of Duke until about 1995 (and you might say how could I not have known about him considering UNC is Duke's biggest rival? Well because I was a little kid, I barely followed Duke as it was or knew much about them).

He bounced around the league a little bit but he still made it, which means he had to have been a good player. RiP

What a great player. Amazing how Dean Smith managed to recruit him (I thought he was destined for Michigan or Indiana). Then was a dominant player at UNC…culminating in Smith’s second national championship.

RIP

Remember him coming into Cornell in 1991 to play against the Big Red (Dean had an agreement with his players that they would get one game close to their hometown if they stayed all four years. King Rice was a senior from Binghamton (an hour away sharing a conference with Ithaca HS). Syracuse didn't have space to schedule them and Binghamton was a D3 school then so Carolina offered a 2 and 1 to Cornell with the 1 as the first game. Probably the biggest game to have been played in the 30 plus years of Newman Arena from a community awareness standpoint, selling out the 5000 ish sear building despite it being Winter Break. Cornell had no answer for Montross and the rest of the Tar Heels.

52 is way too young.

I remember when he was being recruited. He was recruited at the same time as Damon Bailey, the hyped Indiana recruit that played at a school called Bedford North Lawrence. Eric Montross played at Lawrence North in Indianapolis. Interesting how those similar school names make you remember people from over 30 years ago.

He made a legend for himself at Carolina. RIP.

Love that Smith rewarded players for staying 4 years in that way! Do any other coaches do that?

Eric went to High School at Lawrence North, on the far NE side of Indianapolis. Less than 5 miles from where I was living.

Both Michigan and Indiana had been down, but were showing promise and were both interested in Eric. Neither was maintaining the level that UNC was at and I believe the coaching situations at both were a bit shaky.

I was really disappointed at the time that the best Hoosier talent was not staying closer to home, but it was not possible to not like him. He was/is a legend, always graciously giving props to the schools that were interested in him.

I seem to remember him using his elbows a bit too much.
