ECU needs some wins!!!! As bad as ECU is, I'm not even sure you could guarantee a win against them.

I think ECU is the perfect example of "the grass isn't always greener". And also shows what a bad program can do to a good coach.

You had me until "good coach."

Wonder if they saw what happened with LU, and are trying to replicate that approach. If soft schedules are rewarded, that may become the trend.

Just to clarify it was actually ECU that canceled the Boise St series, in addition to the Marshall series. Early morning typo.

Sept 2026 and Sep 2028. Would love to see us pick it up. ECU now has openings as well, if we could talk them into it.

Quote:Boise State is also down to two scheduled non-conference opponents both seasons with the cancellation of the East Carolina series.

The sad part is that ECU had a very respectable program for a long time. They would regularly win games they shouldn't and play a very good schedule. There was a time when I looked up to their program.

Mikey absolutely ran ECU into the ground, all because he couldn't see what an incompetent Kirkpatrick is. He was doing the same thing at JMU. I could not believe the absolute horror show our offense was in 2018. Losing to Elon, New Hampshire, and Colgate should have been big, big red flags, especially for the admin at ECU.

Nope!

Outside of New England and Alaska, state flagships have no business remaining in the current FCS (hello Montana, Montana St, NDSU, SDSU)..

No great conference home with an opening is the biggest challenge. Low population density, and not a lot of other schools nearby outside the B1G. While those 4 could make the jump, seems unlikely the rest of MVFC or Big Sky could based on size/resources.

MWC is closest to a fit, but will be at 14 if OSU/WSU join. The other G5 conferences have mostly said they want to be more regional. It feels like they are stranded on an island for now.

I think there's a lot of factors. Keeping Kirkpatrick around is certainly one of them. Perhaps he was too loyal. Also doesn't help matters that Kirkpatrick has a history with ECU.
I think it's also a case of what a bad program can do to a good coach. Houston certainly didn't do ECU any favors, but ECU was a bad program before he got there.
He had high P5 aspirations (specifically NC P5s). But I think it's pretty safe to say those dreams are dead.
To be fair, I think he would have had a similar result at Charlotte. Both are bad programs.
But he got a nice paycheck out of it. He'll find a coaching home somewhere, but no way will it be P5 (and probably not even FBS). I think he'll end up being back in FCS.
Meanwhile we are FBS and the future couldn't be brighter. Sometimes things just work out.
