But Xavier still lost.

He transferred to Xavier in the hopes of making the NCAA tournament. They are 4-5 now.

That 34 plus our 39 could have almost matched Houston’s 75 03-wink

He scored 43 over the weekend against DePaul (career high) and was named Big East player of the week. Xavier is 4th (I believe) in the BE, so they're solidly in line for an NCAA bid.

RE: Olivari scores 34 points tonight
Obviously, continuing to lose these guys to higher profile programs hurts. But I have noticed that the players that often leave are highly complimentary and supportive of Pera. Could there actually be a net benefit in the short term. Would more prospective high profile recruits desire to come to Rice to be developed under Pera based upon the success of those that transferred away after a productive collegiate career at Rice? Eventually, I would think that when more high profile recruits (e.g., Dawes) come to Rice, that would eventually raise our winning profile and then instead of constant transfers some may stick around.

RE: Olivari scores 34 points tonight
I think we need to look at transfers as different categories of players.

*Rice Degree - Olivari played at Rice for 4 years and has a Rice degree. He did everything that could reasonably have been expected of him when he matriculated (from a Rice athletics standpoint). Having him choose to spend his 5th (covid) year of eligibility at Rice would have been a gift. Plenty of other guys did this at Rice (including guys who played 3 years and transferred with a degree). I don't begrudge them one iota.

* Multiple years - Guys like Trey Murphy, Drew Peterson, and Marcus Evans who came to Rice for 2 years. I am fine they were at Rice 2 years and glad they weren't 1-and-done. Getting a great player for 2 years is still enough to help move the program forward ... but obviously not as much as if they stay longer. I think keeping a few more of these guys is key to building the program ... which is why I am really hoping to see Mekhi Mason stick around.

* 1-and-done - Dylan Ennis and Sean Obi being examples. Not here long enough to help build the program and seem to be more about building their own brand then being part of a team/program. I know some of the 2-year guys might have similar motives, and I don't hate the motive ... I just don't think Rice can build sustained success who come to Rice looking for a personal springboard.

Not only did Olivari play a full 4 years at Rice, I think he actually spent 5 calendar years at Rice. I don't blame him at all for moving on for his final year of eligibility.

I’m assuming that Dylan did help getting Dominique to Rice.
