Imagine keeping Terry Bowden for nearly 20 years.
LOL....that ain't even close to the same thing. When did Ellis win less than 30% of his games?

It’s much closer than you want to believe. In football you can’t pad multiple wins with NAIA and other schools.

It may not be a direct comparison but it’s pretty darn close.

That's why I think it's important to know when to walk away. He turned a lot of people off including myself by focusing on stat padding easy wins for the last few years to increase his All time win total. No real focus on building the program or any development.

You don't really understand unless it's your program it's happening to.

These guys are VERY well paid compared to most of us. They can deal with abuse if they fail or overstay their effectiveness/drive. Did you spend most of your life barely getting by to help those less fortunate? A life spent teaching and changed lives for terrible pay? Risk your life to save others? People that have truly served others deserve that respect, not sports figures, even if they are outstanding their whole career.

And yes, I completely understand what you guys are talking about! We have Keith Richard as our HC. He was a PG for us back in the 70's and early 80's, assistant coach for us for several years and now HC for 14 years. We just played a school from Hot Springs, Arkansas that has 150 students total.

Are we talking D1 games? Or are you approving of all his D2/3/NAIA wins?

I’m sticking with D1, because his abuse of adding to his win total via the dregs of the basketball world was flat out appalling and incomprehensible that it was allowed to continue.

We are 1-5 vs D1 this year. (OT win over 2-5 SC Upstate, maybe you’ve heard of them?)

2022/23: 8-20 vs D1, 5-13 Conference (both < 30%)

Our fans have been clamoring for years to have him gone. It’s been a decade+ without any improvement. These past couple years are icing on the cake.

I think the proper thing would be to say thank you rather than "Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead."

Man won almost 900 games. You can be happy and still give him his due.

Some of you are being d***s about this.

Damn, there are are a lot of non-Coastal fans telling us how we should feel about this.

The majority of people under the age of the normal Old Folks Home Field Trip demographic that attends our games were ready for Cliff to retire years ago. Sure, he did some great things for our program (and other programs) back in the day. It is possible to be appreciative of his past success and also be extremely glad he's finally gone.

We almost lost to a D3 school this season. A D3 school! That's simply unacceptable at this level. I join other Coastal fans in being glad that Cliff Ellis is no longer our coach.

Your feelings are your feelings. But if you love the sport, you thank Cliff for his contributions to the game while you're planning your party. And, for that matter, the two NCAA appearances he got for YOUR school.

That was almost 10 years ago...what about everything in between?

The school gave him a press ceremony broadcasted on ESPN+ and he was never fired when he could've been. I think he felt the love.

Come on now. A legendary coach like Ellis deserves a bit more respect than that.

He exhausted his stay at Coastal. He was the guy that stayed too long past his prime. Coastal wasn't going to fire him but it was just one of those things where he needed to read the room. He definitely didn't need to come come in this season.
I can't say that I would disagree with that but damn. Look at what the man did for you guys. I'd say he earned the right to lead as long as he could.

I disagree with the sentiment that ANY coach should be given years past their prime because of past accomplishments. One, two, three bad seasons in a row can set a program back for a decade or more.

It’s an extremely difficult thing to predict when is the right time but it has to be done and it’ll almost certainly divide the fan base for a while but winning cures all hurts.
