I felt the hire was a tad underwhelming at first but as I watched the game he just seemed to project confidence. What do Chant fans think of him after the first season?
A solid 8.
So, he did a number of positive things throughout the season and the season leading prior to. For starters, he pretty much kept a large, talented roster here for at least one season. And while, yes, Grayson McCall did get that head injury and pretty much sat out afterwards for rest of the season, and jarrod Brown who I believe redshirted the rest of the season, we still kept javon Simpkins, our nearly four-star RB, and McDoom, our amazing corner. We've, I mean, in terms of recruiting, have gotten a much better class than we've had under Jamie Chadwell. Furthermore,, on the recruiting path, we've pretty much gotten what we've always wanted, which was solid offensive and defensive lines. We've gotten a ton of kids through the portal that's been instant additions to the team. So, on that front, even though he is known as a recruiter, he's done a fantastic job, for starters. In terms of the games, he, while having some games where some of his play calling was a bit questionable: not going for it within fourth and reasonable, being a bit too conservative, a lot of the offensive play calling during the James Madison game (although I don't know whether or not that was Trickett's doing or his own) I'm not going to hold the Army game against him, because to both his and Army's admission, Army pretty much switched up to a whole new style of play that they weren't consistently playing the entire season. And even then, we did adjust to that, we just couldn't beat the time of possession. So, as a coach, purely on the field perspective, hell yeah. He's doing a great job. Defensively, with his hires, stellar. Out of the ******* park. Especially compared to chadwells' regime, with our “bend and don't break defense” which allowed so many points per game, it basically became who had the better offense at the end of the day. Offense, while going through some growing pains with ChadWells' kids and Grayson McCall, he did find himself his rhythm by the end of the season, not even by the end of the season, my bad, the start of the second quarter of the season. So, there's that., I think he is a great coach. If we won a couple of those games that we lost, I think he could have been in the consideration of coach of the year. Otherwise, I think if he truly does improve with recruiting classes, and really just continues on the path, he'll easily surpass Jamie Chadwell's reputation here. Although, Jamie Chadwell's reputation, depending on who you ask, is a little marred in controversy and hatred.
