Because by playing and beating Rutgers we are proving our point that the gap is BS. I'm not going to argue that chocolate ice cream tastes better vanilla and then put two bowls of vanilla in front of you to prove it. 01-wingedeagle

And for your specific teams, pretty much all of SBCE is recruiting against Rutgers more than UNLV or Boise State.

You’re right. That would’ve better been stated as “outside of your top blue bloods, ours are every bit as good as yours.”

I’d agree if we weren’t talking about pitting our Blue Bell vanilla against their Great Value chocolate. Our 2nd place team beating their 7th place team isn’t proving much, either, as everyone is all too happy to remind us when it happens. And should we lose, it just solidifies the bias as true.

I’m all for our our 8-3 playing a P5 8-3, maybe a 7-4, but our 9- or 10-win team settling for their random 6-6 is bullcrap we shouldn’t eagerly welcome. If there are other factors like proximity, history, or whatever involved, that may well make for a more interesting game, but in a blind grab bag, give me the highest quality on-field opponent.

I'd rather be in a game I can attend. Dec 13-17 I cannot attend. So... anything but that?

Always P5 if you're playing for conference perception. Might not be the best opponent and you might even be favored, heavily. But when a G5 beats a P5, ears perk up. The more we do it the less shocking it becomes and the respect we garner. The less "got lucky" we have to hear about. We're just taking care of business.

And let's also be realistic, how excited a team is to be in a bowl plays a role in how well they'll play.

To quote a guest on our show last week “nobody remembers context a year from now”. Go get the scalp.

If the P5 isn’t motivated they have a culture problem.

Give me a 6-6 Illinois over a 9-3 Northern Illinois any day.

Nobody is ever surprised when Marshall beats anyone in the country or when USM does. It’s the rest of us 12 that need to start beating P5s more frequently.

Is this really any debate? The P5 opponent is much more preferred.

The icing on the cake is you get the P5 on a neutral field instead of at their place which is where all regular season P5 games are played on a tilted field.

It ha little to do with how good or highly ranked the G5 is in the current year. And everything to do with how history remembers it.

In a years time, let alone 5, history will remember you beat the P5 name school. Not what their record or ranking was. No matter how highly ranked Toledo is, it would be just playing a MAC school.
