Completely agree that's something they could begin immediately when ownership changed hands, but of course we are always reactionary rather than forward thinking.

Remember the article stating how easily the USFL changed the camera angle from the West to East side last year after our brilliant leadership said it was impossible? Now we have $170M+ committed and we continue to sit on our hands while having months to prepare to move dirt this month and funds readily available to start the process.

I don't think current leadership ever said the move West to East was impossible. They just couldn't do anything about it. No one is sitting on their hands. In case you missed it, Laird has been making rounds updating everyone and prepping for the final $50M fundraising. The legal team is getting the final i's dotted on transfer of ownership. Plans have been created and are being revisited with a budget now. Not sure what else you expect when we still don't have the title and keys to the stadium.

Good post - deserves to be read.

The USFL could do it but we could not -- remember, it was impossible for the University to do this, or at least that was the message, if you haven't lived under a rock for years, it simply required proactiveness which has been missing in our athletic department for decades:

Ownership has changed hands and yet we sit on ours. It's time to move dirt rather than sit idly by, if we know the first steps, start the process rather than doing rounds talking about it. We've had months/years to do the talking, time to see action as funds are readily available.

Not a lot of dirt to be moved. It is a renovation not an addition. The press box will probably move back to the west side after the new press box is built. If the cameras are being moved to the east side there will be no one in the stands the cameras are pointed at for next season! I thought with the construction going on and everyone sitting on the east side next season every game would look like a sellout. I under stand the need to move everything from the press box so distruction of that monstrosity can commence sooner than later.

So we are two weeks behind a theoretical dirt turning! Smiths donation was great but it’s not like the entire $220 million to throw at the entire project. They have to figure out what they can do now and what fits with the least disruption of UM and other users. No need to panic.

yep, we have 120 million so the UofM has to triage the project so we have time to fundraise.

Is there any news of when the renovations for the stadium will begin? I know they were hoping for January 2024, but I was curious if it was being pushed back on the grounds of fundraising the rest of the money before starting it or if we know they're going to start. Sorry if this is a dumb quesiton:D

The most recent news we have from Laird Veatch publicly is from 6 days ago (via The Daily Memphian):
Quote:He explained that the first phase would be to move what Veatch described as the gameday operation components from the west side of the stadium to the east side. That includes the coaches’ booth, media press box and television operations. Veatch said he anticipates having more information “in the coming weeks.”

Thank you very much. I definitely missed that. I appreciate it!

You are incredible. The funds WERE NOT available until the Grizzlies got on board AND THEN the ownership transfer was approved by the city council buffoons. No construction could start until those things happened. Planning certainly occurred before then but adjustments to the final plans have to be made and a timeline put together.

I'm not sure what the view will look like at the game or on TV next year. If they are moving all of the media/press box and cameras to the east side, it will mostly show the west side that is under construction? They may use some remote cameras on the west sidelines to pick up the crowd on the East side. Would be interesting to know.

Are they going to use some of the skyboxes on the east side for press box and media next year?

That is a massive undertaking. A lot of fiber optics, telephones for the sidelines and connecting to the video and pa systems.

Last I heard from Laird is he expects next season seating to be in the same location as historically. This year will be about planning, fundraising, infrastructure (tv, media, suites), temp premium seating, and probably some stuff around the halo.

That’s what I understand everybody moves to the west side and south end zone for 2024. Then reopen the east side for 2025 with lots of premium options. Expect tickets and giving levels to increase in 2025.

I’ll likely drop a couple of extra tickets I get every year so I won’t feel the increase as much.
