Most people are confused. You are not alone.

This is what I THINK, but obviously up to interpretation:

Power Rating: Who would win on a neutral field if the games were played today. This is a vegas style rating based purely on team strength.
Performance Rating / Game Grade: Single game "how well did you do in this week's game".
Team Rankings: A mixture of power ratings, and "Merit".

To clarify, Team Rankings reward you for good behavior, even if you are not truly "the best" on the field. You are punished for bad losses, and praised for great wins. Whether you "deserve" to be ranked high is taken heavily into consideration. This is how the CFP, AP, and the Coaches polls operate. Though the coaches poll is the closest to a power rating of the three.

If it really is a "this week only" ranking, then Coastal should be a lot lower, after losing to a 6 loss Army team. Those losses include losses to ULM and UMass. For some reason, that logic only holds for the top of the league?

It isn't, though. That's a game grade / performance rating. These are vegas style power ratings. That's how I do it, but everyone is free to interpret them how they like, lol.

Competing to be the best G5:
1. Troy - Bet UL. (2)
2. Appalachian State - Won four straight and getting stronger. (5)
3. James Madison - Lost OT game at home to surging App. (1)

The Middle:
4. Coastal Carolina - Embarrassing loss to Army. (3)
5. South Alabama - Shutout Marshall. D is HOT! (9)
6. Arkansas State - Apparently TX ST's D isn't s good as USA's D. (10)
7. Texas State - Obliterated by stAte. (4)
8. ODU - Won at GS. (11)
9. Georgia Southern - Lost three straight. (6)
10. Georgia State - Lost four straight. (7)

The Bottom:
11. Marshall - Has to beat scorching hot stAte to get a bowl. (8)
12. Southern Miss - Played MSU tough for three quarters. (12)
13. Louisiana - Lost three straight. Can bowl by beating ULM. (13)
14. Louisiana Monroe - Army was likely their sole FBS win. (14)

Army has some bad losses and showings but they also have some solid wins. (UTSA, Air Force, Coastal)

If we are talking about a week by week basis, it's also worth noting that Army randomly reverted back to the triple option this game after not running it all season. It's still a bad loss but it's one you can just chalk up to playing a service academy and expecting to see something completely different. They are already hard enough to prepare for as is.

Power rankings should be (to me) who you think would win straight up on a neutral field.

To me the top 4 are clear

1) Troy
2) App
3) JMU
4) CCU

After that it’s a jumbled mess.
