By “pulling the trigger NOW” what do you think needs to be happening that’s not already happening (behind closed doors in the JMU administration)?
Architectural feasibility studies have already been completed. They were done when the original “new” side of BFS was constructed. That’s why BFS looks like it does today. LR left JMU with the theoretical “blue print” about what the replacement to the Godwin side will look like.
Funding for up-to-date, specific construction plans that detail the tear-down/rebuild are most likely going to wait until the new AD is hired. Those detailed plans will of themselves cost hundreds of thousands, if not a few millions of $$$….and anything over 1 million for construction requires approval from the General Assembly.
At present, interest rates for bonds (which will undoubtedly be required to build any expansion) are very high. If they soften, perhaps in the next 24-30 months, we might see some specific requests in JMU’s budgeting planning process that documents how JMU wants to proceed. This timeline would also coincide with JMU getting closer to retiring the bonds on the first expansion.
The energy and enthusiasm for JMU athletics experienced this past weekend were intoxicating. I firmly believe that the push and need for expanding BFS isn’t going to go away, indeed, it’s only going to grow,
That said, the issue of starting “now” is a bit misleading. Planning is already underway. Yet, like everything JMU does, the planning for expansion is following an orderly (and for fans) secretive and painstakingly long time.
