MSU is not top 25 in revenue generated. UK is top 20. UK recruits nationally, which is now what you have to do to stay on top in football or basketball. MSU recruits mostly in state with a few from neighboring states. Kentucky pays top dollar for a basketball coach (though IMO they waste money on Calipari). MSU can't pay top dollar for basketball and stay competitive in coaching salaries for football. Kentucky is a basketball first school which is fortunate to have Mark Stoops. Mississippi State is a football first fan base.

I'm afraid the trends for both are set in stone.

Ole Miss can afford to do both, but prefer the grove and football.
