The players spread out and sat at the tables with us while we ate and mingled with the season ticket holders. Many on the women's team were at night classes but Castro introduced every one and told a little anecdote on each. He stated that they were 4th in MAC attendance, and only 20-30 fans short of being 2nd or third while exhorting fans to bring a friend. He stated how important it was for both teams when there is some energy in the arena.

The men's team stood to one side and Heath pointed out how they had gotten some more height this year. He talked about how history and legacy of EMU basketball and how they were trying to live up to that. Both coaches lauded the facilities and how they were a big recruiting draw. We toured the locker rooms and workout areas, places where the athletes could study, play video games and ping pong. There was also a cool film room and nutrition area. The women's area did have an extra room with very cushy chairs and video screen. That's when the comment was made about the women's success over the men's in a very playful offhand way, and how the men hadn't earned it yet. I can't remember word for word but everyone chuckled. So, don't beat up Superfan for this, he was just trying to explain what he heard.

I left the event feeling very impressed and even ready to go to more women's games this year. (Detroit Mercy Monday, 11/6).

Lastly, come on guys. I'm a teacher and I'm about ready to make some of you stay after school if you can't learn to be nice!!

Don't say guys! There is no equal status here! He came on here and attacked me! I don't put up with that from anyone! Every time I post on here he attacks me so don't even put me down to his level! I have the right to attacked back and will do so every time!

Yeah, the women tore it up last season, 7-11, 15-15, no TV games. Incredible season! You constantly criticize the men's team, you single out a player and attack him personally and you NEVER have criticism for the women, yet they have been largely unsuccessful. Unwittingly, that makes YOU sexist and patronizing towards them.

When they hurt the team I will! Duh! So far it's only been two coaches! Duh! The team doesn't set the TV game. More successful than the men's team since 1999. Better than the men last year and men's team had a so called NBA star player. Second year will be better than (I know duh). But we only lost one starter. I didn't attend the fall tournaments so I don't how well they did. On another note I put up some fake owls to try and keep the geese off the fields. 07-coffee3

RE: Meeting the teams and coaches basketball
After game 1, looks like this is the current depth chart (I am assuming McGriff is starting in the absence of Lovejoy, and will revert to a back up when Lovejoy returns from injury- but I don’t know)…

PG 6-2 Lovejoy (So) / 6-0 McGriff (RCJr)
SG 6-4 Acuff (CJr) / 6-4 Rice (CJr)
SF 6-7 Ellerbe (CJr) / 6-6 Osnojik (Fr) / 6-9 Pranger (So)
PF 6-8 Sernev (RCJr) / 6-8 Jihad (CJr) / 6-8 Billingsley (Jr)
C 6-7 Legend (RSo) / 7-0 Martynov (So) / 6-10 Randle (RSo)

RE: Meeting the teams and coaches basketball
Nickle pointed out in the Butler game that everyone is getting minutes. This was especially true with the frontcourt where no one got more than 20 minutes, and only Randle was in single digits with 5 minutes. I can see the starters and minute distribution in the frontcourt to change as season goes on. But it seems difficult (for me anyway) to predict which way this will go. Each of these players seem to have different skills and weaknesses. Interested in anyone’s thoughts on the matter??

Seems like arguments can be made that Osojnik might be a clear best player on the team by season’s end. And probably deserves a starting role now, but I like him coming off the bench for scoring punch. Although it seems that Osojnik and Elllerbe’s joining the team pushed Pranger out of the rotation. Curious if anyone knows if that was the case, or is he injured??

I was wondering what happened to Luka Savicevic and a quick google search says he is now playing for Lafayette. It is so odd now that when reviewing a team's roster, like Eastern's, the vast majority of players are transfers from other colleges. Will recruiting high school players become obsolete?

Bob, you make a great point. I think at EMU, that will be the case.

Why recruit an absolutely raw project like Mo Njie, develop him and watch him transfer after one year? Why recruit a Luka who was not muscularly ready to play in the MAC, only to see him head to the exit after two seasons?

The transfer portal has changed NCAA athletics. Great MAC underclassmen transfer up to better programs while Sincere Carry descends to Kent St and becomes an absolute star. Do you honestly think that Ray Lee or JT4 would have spent four seasons at EMU in today's world? If I were Stan Heath, the LAST PLACE you would catch me recruiting is a high school gym.

I have to agree with all of that. Brandon Bowdry also comes to mind as someone who would have been stolen. It is disheartening to say the least.

Disheartening until you consider Joe Burrow. Without the opportunity to transfer, possibly the best QB in the NFL, never starts a game at OSU and is teaching school in Ohio today.

You and I, and MAC coaches need to accept those changes.

I have to agree with all of that. Brandon Bowdry also comes to mind as someone who would have been stolen. It is disheartening to say the least.

Thanks for the update on Luka, BobW! I lost track of that guy. Lafyette/Patriot League is a nice land for the guy. Happy for him and wish him the best of luck.

I initially was down on the transfer portal too, but DanSplaining totally converted me to accept if not even appreciate it.

PG 6-2 Lovejoy (So) / 6-0 McGriff (RCJr)
SG 6-4 Acuff (CJr) / 6-4 Rice (CJr)
SF 6-7 Ellerbe (CJr) / 6-6 Osnojik (Fr) / 6-9 Pranger (So)
PF 6-8 Sernev (RCJr) / 6-8 Jihad (CJr) / 6-8 Billingsley (Jr)
C 6-7 Legend (RSo) / 7-0 Martynov (So) / 6-10 Randle (RSo)
I was wondering what happened to Luka Savicevic and a quick google says he is now playing for Lafayette.

It appears to be a total crap shoot. I still can't determine if it helps us more or hurts us more or if it becomes a total wash. It certainly appears to help the football team, notwithstanding losing Lassiter.

Oh, I fully agree. Can’t really tell myself.
