WacHoopsNation tweeted an email had been sent out to several schools which he wouldn’t name, stating not to call the WAC/CUSA games a challenge. I’m guessing it was sent to the CUSA schools but I don’t know. The FIU announcing crew said they were directed not to call these games a challenge.

A couple of interesting notes I heard from the Tarleton pre and post games radio broadcasts….

We are down two starters due to injuries, Traivar Jackson at the 4 and Kevin Paul at the 5.

We have a total of 6 scholarship players out with injuries so we are playing with only 7 scholarship players. I think SFA from last year can relate.

They beat Sam in OT at their place.

RE: WAC MEN'S BASKETBALL WEEK #1
As Meatloaf said "2 out of 3 Aint Bad" Tarleton manhandled FI (NOT A) U and the other 2 went to OT with UVU beating Sam Houston and SFA falling to Middle Tennessee State. Thoughts- UVU looks below average for a WAC team and not remotely close to where they were last year. SFA looked good for the most part, was frustrated by the full court press. Middle Tennessee looked light years ahead of Sam Houston and FIU. SFA is a good team that lost to another good team in OT. Tarleton looked WAY better than it did in the opener, but considering the competition they faced tonight, or rather lack there of, I guess I am not surprised. Still think we are not as good as last year, but hope they improve as the season progresses.

Oklahoma St was picked 10th in the Big 12. Beating Oral Roberts or Southeast Missouri State should garner better recognition as those were tourney teams laste year. ORU was picked to win it all again.

But OSU is a DI PLUS school and WAC is DI relegation, so that win gets the attention. Good win, a necessary in the elevation of the conference, but maybe the WAC is at a point where it should win those types of games.

[Suddenly everyone stops smiling and stands at attention as 1st Lieutenant UTASportscaster enters the room.] Yes, sir, of course you are correct. Oklahoma State was not really that good, and losing to ACU is part of the evidence. ORU and SEMO went to the NCAA. Oral Roberts and Oklahoma State ended last season at roughly the same net ranking, and far above any WAC schools.

But come on, Lieutenant, the average guy-in-bar is going to be impressed by beating Ok St, but may not even know what the abbreviations ORU and SEMO stand for. And even UTRGV has beaten SEMO, which came in around #240 last year. I concede ORU was a very good win but GCU was a heavy favorite over SEMO.

The WAC is the 13th ranked conference (-0.96 rating) sitting below MVC (+0.50) and CUSA (+1.46) and ahead of the Ivy League (-1.16) and the Sun Belt (-1.31).

Team Rankings
GCU = 78
SFA = 106
Seattle = 137
ACU = 142
UVU = 166
CBU = 180
UTA = 208
Tarleton = 236
Utah Tech = 237
UTRGV = 243
Southern Utah = 258

I cannot remember the last year that the WAC did not have a team in the 300s.
Go WAC!

That year was last year.
Stated as fact, yet incorrect. The data is for this year.

No, what the poster means is that the WAC had zero teams in the 300's last year.

Exactly. As a subscriber to KenPom, I can look back at previous years. And in FACT, last year, the WAC had no teams ranked in the 300s.

Cats struggling against the size and skill of NC State. They are a much better team than OSU and ACU isn't able to hit their shots. They hung in for a little while, but now the gap is widening as the first half progresses.

What's hard to watch is that not only is NC State bigger and more athletic, but they are simply playing smarter ball right now; up 29-47 at the half.

I know this isn’t WAC related, but TAMU Commerce is losing to Kentucky 43-35 in the second half.

Go Lions.

Our new guys are built like TEs and LBs and can jump out of the gym. Gaddy really beefed up over the Summer and its already paying dividends. Overall not as quick and shifty as previous BCG teams, but super athletic. If we can just get a dependable defensive presence around the rim when everybody's healthy we could be a real problem in the WAC! Can't wait to see what Paul & Co. bring to the table. Great sign we bounced back and looked way more confident last night, albeit against lesser competition 04-cheers

Gotcha! I misunderstood the poster. 01-ncaabbs Of course, I did not have much to go on.
However, if my memory is correct, I believe we did have a team (UTRGV) start in the 300s last year. We certainly had none by the end of the year as KenPom clearly demonstrates.

It doesn't seem to be ACU's night (currently NC State is up 84-58) but I do like the way ACU plays. Their defense, the way they push the ball quickly up the court and their teamwork is fun to watch. You can tell they are well coached.
Side note: As a GCU fan, it is nice to see Aidan Igiehon getting a lot of playing time at ACU.

RE: WAC MEN'S BASKETBALL WEEK #1
Thanks DZ1. Unfortunately NC State's team is just too big and athletic this time around. They dominated us. We kept trying but just could not get rolling. NC State played defense the way we like to play it. Hopefully we learned some things for such a game.
