After that, not sure? I suppose JMU and Georgia Southern. In the West it's Louisiana, still mad at them for rallying around a cheap shot targeting penalty in the New Orleans Bowl.
Did you forget about the cheap shot kick to the back of the head by the Marshall player?

For Marshall...
1. App State = years upon years upon years of hate and frustration and elation.
2. JMU = in a few more years I think this will be a big one.
3. Southern Miss = I miss playing them, we used to play every year.
3. ODU = this is starting to get interesting.
3. Georgia Southern = rekindled old school match-up.
4. Troy
4. Louisiana

App State obvious reasons.
Coastal because of the 2020 championship game
Marshall Nola bowl and good games since we’ve started playing.

Felt like Arkansas State was going to be at one point. My pettiness will not accept Coastal as a Rival. ODU and Georgia State need to beat us at least once before we talk about them in this conversation.

I’ll admit I wasn’t a Georgia Southern fan back when we shared a conference with Marshall the first time. I’m surprised a lot of Marshall fans and GS fans consider the series an “old school rivalry.” Before last season, we hadn’t played since 1996 and Marshall was on a 4 game win streak in our 6 game series. Since I wasn’t around, I’m curious where the rivalry aspect comes from with that.

I grew up as an ACC basketball fan during Maryland’s best years in the late 90s - early 2000s. The best part of the league was every game had a rivalry vibe. The Sun Belt East has that same potential.
App State and lesser extent Georgia Southern are rivals because of their early 1AA success that JMU didn’t recreate until after they were gone. ODU is irrelevant to me, no one talked about it from 2001-2005 when I was a student. I don’t know any ODU grads, may as well be Charlotte. Marshall seems fun with a great football history. Coastal and Georgia Southern give me an opportunity to see road games each year. Swap Georgia State for East Carolina and I’ll be complete.

App, Marshall, and GS are a triad of history in the Sunbelt, reunited. Even when we weren't actually playing a game vs GS we still played for a natty in their stadium. And for many years it was either App or Marshall moving into the playoffs, depending on who won the regular season matchup. Good to be playing both again with bigger stakes on the line.

#1 GS
#2 Marshall
#3 JMU
History with all three. Marshall is a strange one for me personally. I don't really hate them, I just really want to beat them. I had a lot of respect and envy when they made the move in the 90's, and rooted for them on may occasions before we moved to the SBC.

Marshall was the team to beat in the Southern Conference when we joined. Prior to joining we had won both meetings. After joining the conference we never were able to beat them which kind of stuck with fans from the early 90's era I guess.

South is our big rival.
I think of Cajuns/ULM/ASU as FB rivals due to our history together and GAST as a basketball rivalry because they are usually close and hard fought games.

Louisiana is easy to become a rival. If your 1) good at some sport, 2) obnoxiously passionate or 3) protect the bad behavior of your players/coaches, we accept your rivalry. notice the ones calling us Lafayette, are in the 2nd group I mentioned.
USM - #1 all sport all the time.
stAte - Heated football history
USA - traditional all sports
App St - Respected for Football excellence and our championship battles.
Coastal - No explanation needed
Marshall- recently Sparked off with lots of all sport potential
GSU - Basketball, Hunter/Marlin built it strong
I would like to say 2 weeks ago TXST finally pushed the start button with the hype video and then losing again in a close game, then pouting about thinking they are better. We will see how it goes, It could get real good with TXST, all sports.

We don't like losing to Georgia Southern in any sport.
Shawn Elliott's personal rival may have been Jamey Chadwell.
In basketball, we had a back-and-forth thing with UTA, until you guys kicked them out.

Same for me(2004-2008), didn't know ODU was supposedly a rival until I got on the CAAZone. I think our rivals are still a work in progress.

Our longest running series is Memphis, but it's hard to consider that a rivalry since Memphis doesn't view it that way, and its not played every year. It used to be called the Paint Bucket Trophy, but that fell off back in the 60's and 70's.
I think most AState fans would tell you we consider UL our rival, since that game is actually played every year and it has an actual rivalry feel, but the SBC spends far more time marketing UL/ULM, so its probably not recognized outside of Jonesboro and Lafayette. Our series with ULM probably would be a rivalry, but the fan interest isnt there.
Rest of our options have largely been thrown off by the SBC's scheduling format over the years. We were in the middle of something with Troy, but then they got yanked to the East Division and we saw them just a few times in the 2010's.
We are accepting applications for parties interested in becoming our rival however.
I'm surprised you misspelled Tiger High.

Troy and GSU should have a stronger rivalry considering closeness. I think the more diehard fans do see Troy as a rival as it seems when we're at our best Troy tends play spoiler, no matter the sport. Personally I think a Troy/GSU football game should be a protected cross-divisional game. Too close to not play in every sport every season.

Do any Troy fans remember when UCF was our rival in most sports?
When we were in the old version of the A-Sun with UCF, it was usually Troy and UCF fighting it out for the titles in basketball, baseball, softball, and tennis. And then in football from the mid 80's to mid 90's.
In 1988, there was the "Noise Penalty/Towel Game" when UCF hosted #1 Troy at the Citrus Bowl, and "upset" Troy in front of a then record crowd for UCF (31,789).
UCF even has a stone marker at the entrance of their current stadium to memorialize that game.
