We can all agree here in ol’ Virginny that VT and UVA can burn. We all have friends and family at one or the other, but F them and the horse they rode in on. I’ll root for them both when they’re playing some OOS school out of state pride, but that’s it.

For those schools, I root for neither, and never will. One thing about "mid-major" and CAA football, is that the tailgates and relationships appear to be more personal. Doesn't diminish the desire to win and succeed, but meet some really great folks along the way, and CAA football when we started could not have been more driveable, more competitive, and more fun.
Even the JMU folks, which always seemed to smell of dead processed chickens and diesel fuel from working the midnight shift at the Harrisonburg truck plaza mega plex.

But I am looking at rivalries from an all sports perspective and JMU does overall athletics better than most at the G5 level. Granted I would love to have a Tennis program like ODU does.
I am circling our games against VT and UVA way before games against ODU because those provide national relevance whereas most poll voters don't care if we beat ODU. But VT and UVA don't see us the same way and might never (even if we are one day a better athletic program than them).
We've played almost 100 times in basketball. The royal rivalry won't always be so lopsided. And you'll never have an overall athletic program that rivals VT let alone UVA.
If you mean, football, sure, we can’t match tech historically, for obvious reasons, but it’s flat incorrect to say we’ll never have an overall athletic program like tech.

You guys only have 4 national championships?? Amateur hour.
5 according to their wikipedia page, don't undersell yourselves guys.
"JMU has won five NCAA national championships, third-most among Virginia colleges and universities, trailing only Virginia (31) and Old Dominion (28)."

In the MAC, Ohio is our longest foe and little Miami is probably my most hated team ever.
In CUSA, USM and ECU were teams that I would want to play every year for here on out. Total respect for their fanbases and history. ODU became an immediate attachment and had a clever fanbase (I can't hate them yet).
Surprisingly, the teams I dislike the most in the Sun Belt (outside of App St) is Troy and Louisiana. Why? both are hard outs with solid teams and their fanbases have bravado (just like us). My Troy hatred however goes way back to FCS. Other schools are too new for me to have an opinion.
So for this Marshall fan,
1. Happy Appy
2. Troy STATE
3. Lou-Lafayette
Ok, I'm too lazy/stressed to look at Wiki or google, when did we start SoCon? (the 2nd time) Like I said I came in at the tail end of playing ETSU and Co.
Little Miami PROBABLY our most hated? my fav memory is when we beat Big Ben, their coaches trashed the box and one got lead off the field in cuffs...
Now? Well, Ap State.. cuz.. "Mountaineers"... and still haven't totally gotten over the cheap shot from Louisiana in the bowl...
We were in the SoCon just once (MAC twice). We started the SoCon in 1977 and our last season was 1996. A lot of games between Marshall and App State solidified conference champions / playoff berths. We even played App State and Furman in conference play and then later in the playoffs. The SoCon back then (with Georgia Southern included) was a juggernaut and very similar to what the SBC East is now. Go back and watch some of those games on YouTube.. lots of slobberknockers. Hell when we joined the MAC in 1997 i personally feel that the level of play from MAC members was below that of the SoCon until the MAC teams caught up with us around 2000.
#1 Marshall vs #7 Georgia Southern
Man I hope this conference can stay together. Feels like a gift to be here. I could care less what any other conference is doing anymore. I honestly believe there are no additions that could improve the landscape. Mid 50s fan who lived most of the history and it's outstanding we're all in one conference now.
I've said it before and i'll say it again.. the SBC feels like...
EVERYONE can be a rival, if we're playing against you on [enter current day] in [enter sport being played at this moment] then you might already be a rival...

Our longest running series is Memphis, but it's hard to consider that a rivalry since Memphis doesn't view it that way, and its not played every year. It used to be called the Paint Bucket Trophy, but that fell off back in the 60's and 70's.
I think most AState fans would tell you we consider UL our rival, since that game is actually played every year and it has an actual rivalry feel, but the SBC spends far more time marketing UL/ULM, so its probably not recognized outside of Jonesboro and Lafayette. Our series with ULM probably would be a rivalry, but the fan interest isnt there.
Rest of our options have largely been thrown off by the SBC's scheduling format over the years. We were in the middle of something with Troy, but then they got yanked to the East Division and we saw them just a few times in the 2010's.
We are accepting applications for parties interested in becoming our rival however.
For a second, it looked like some interest was starting to heat up between GS and ArkSt, but like you said…scheduling has simmered that down.

Good to read you’re in fine wrasslin’ form smitty.
Oh, and we luv you too, you big, nasty, fishy-smellin’ beach-bum vagrant. Take a shower before you come visit us, and put on some clean clothes. There’s a dress code here in Hillbilly-land. If you don’t have any clean clothes we’ll loan you a potato sack to cover your ugliness.
Don’t get lost coming over the mountains to visit JMU to witness your loser team receive another whoopin’…just keep following those big-rigs West until you smell the chicken sh*t, then turn North towards the dog-food smell. JMU fans have prepared a big plate of crow for you at one of our friendly tail gates near BFS.

I just looked them up because I knew you guys were very good at women’s basketball some years ago but had totally forgotten you were once dominant at field hockey too. My favorite, though, has to be the “co-ed dinghy” championship.
