RE: ODU NIL
Was looking at the collective and actually one of the board members was a HS teammate of mine...another guy on that team played at ODU.

Yep found it. Thanks

M13: If we have three high school signees and the transfer portal, how with just starting NIL, could we pay for new players, if required?

We started the NIL collective a year ago. They fundraised and went through all the legal formation before launching publicly. We have NIL funds if they are necessary.

I guess I read wrong. The only thing I caught was they were starting a new nil group and the meetings started last month. Hummm if I had known it’s has been started a year ago, I would’ve never brought it up.

Pretty soon college football fans will be seen at major intersections collecting NIL money in helmets like the youth football players do now.

The crazy thing is many of these athletes are making more from the donations of NIL supporters than the donors make themselves. Not to mention the free food, housing, education, training etc. If these athletes were working in the real world we'd be targeting them to be giving to the NIL, not taking from it.

This whole system is screwed up. Its not like owner of the Atlanta Falcons is sending out fundraising letters asking average fans to help pony up and help pay Taylor Heinike's salary. But we have the equivalent of that in college football.

So will these kids have the option to not play in bowl games going forward?

They already do. Players have been abandoning their teams for bowl games for several years now, but it got much worse in 2023.

If an ODU player opts out to jump in the portal, they also forgo any remaining NIL payments. And most contracts are structured to have a final payment after the portal closes.

I actually like this approach. NIL donors should get additional perks and additional inclusive meet and greets with players/coaches. It will also encourage those that are on the fence with donating to donate to the collective. Reward those that are truly financially invested in the product.

RE: ODU NIL
Much more basic questions: How much does ODU have in its NIL account? Is it one lump sum, or is there X amount for MBB, WBB, FB. Is there a going rate for the kids who would play at our level, say a MBB forward? How does MJ & staff go about evaluating transfers, since there are hundreds of them? Do they talk to HS coaches, opposing college coaches, the kid's own college coach? I don't care how much an individual kid is getting from ODU, but it shouldn't be too much to ask what kind of pot the money's coming from. Hell, it might even spur additional giving if it seems too low to be competitive.

I'd hope basketball would have in the $200-$250k range for NIL payments, but I kind of doubt it since the goal was $500k for all sports and football will take a majority. But for hoops I figure if you have two $50k guys, three $25k guys, and the rest at around $10k you're at approximately $250k in salaries right there. But Im just guessing at what a school at our level might need to compete based upon what P5s are reportedly handing out. How much did Mekhi Long get at VT? I thought I heard $30-50k. I hear rumor that Matthew Hodge is getting $300k at Villanova himself.

Nova's payroll next year for players is rumored to be in the $3-4 million dollar range. I think they were pushing $3 million this year, for an NIT bid (where they ended up getting beat by VCU.)

I wonder how much the yellow stinkers up 64 have for their hoops players payroll?

If Hodge gets $300,00.00 from Villanova, there goes any chance of getting him, via release because of his Dad. It’s going to take big donors and time to reach that kind of money. I wonder what is being offered to our two high school recruits?

Dam he's making more playing college ball, than his dad is making coaching. Think Mathew is really locked in on Nova, it was his dream school.

I hear what you’re saying, but in fairness, those guys are like almost 80 years old. Pretty sure they were on their way out anyway.

RE: ODU NIL
I hope these NIL kids are being advised on payments received and the taxable considerations. I envision a time down the road where all the money is gone and there is a tax bill to be paid. Even if there is some withholding on payments made, it may not be enough to settle the ultimate taxes due. If the dollar amount is significant enough, there could be higher withholding or estimated taxes required. Just not sure how sophisticated college kids are in this regard. Hope they are getting good guidance.

To be honest, the whole thing is kind of a turn-off.
