ACC rumblings
This will likely never actually happen. But is nice to be in the conversation.
According to a couple of reports surfacing; the ACC must think there is a good possiblity of the Clemson statements about breaking their grant of rights coming to fruition.
The ACC reportedly has already begun vetting potential replacement schools:
1. Tulane
2. South Florida
3. Memphis
4. UAB
5. East Carolina
6. Tulsa

The ACC planning contingencies for potential departures of UNC, Clemson, FSU, Miami by backfilling with AAC programs. Wazzu/OSU still seem the obvious choices but what do you think of this conference?

That would be nice, but frankly at least for the forseeable future I slot it alongside any number of realignment threads that I find extremely unlikely to happen.

Not only football, but basketball would be GREAT! Imagine hosting Duke on a regular basis.

Let's face it. 5 years ago, even 2 years ago if you had said the ACC would have Cal, Stanford and SMU you would have qualified for antipsychotic therapy. Us going to the ACC would be one of the least surprising things I've seen in realignment.

Anyone know if UAB is making a concerted effort to attain AAU status?

Not since Watts took over, so far as I know. I'd love to be wrong, but I doubt it.

Well now, we wouldn't want to embarrass the "flagship institution" by being AAU while they're still trying to master crayons in their greek row palaces, would we?
IMO, yes. Yes, we would.

That no doubt plays a role, but there is a sizeable expense involved. That's an investment that obviously gets returned massively, both in direct terms (increases in research grants etc.) and indirect (prestige matters). But it does represent cash that can't go to pretty new buildings and all the attendant opportunity for graft ribbon-cutting photo ops.
Joe Volker's admonition against dreaming only little dreams has died. UAB's failure to gain AAU status, when South Florida has gained it, should have been worth Ray Watts' pumpkin head all by itself. Instead, no one notices.

The fact that Cal and Stanford are involved is exactly why UAB won't be

No one in an administrative role at UAB or the University of Alabama System has publicly uttered the letters AAU in that order since Dick Marchase took over in an interim status when Dr. Garrison was fired. Those ambitions are in the same trash can as the UAB stadium business plan in AB 1070
UAB could be, should be, and really is the state's Georgia Tech but we'll never get the prestige they do because of obvious reasons

Yep. It’s always blown my mind that UAB is viewed as a far more prestigious institution across America (and the world for that matter) than in its own state. Ray is fapping.
