Nice scouting report on Parker Smith (who's 2023 stats were much, much better before he hit the wall the final several weeks of the season)...

RE: Rice Baseball Fall Ball 2023
For those who have not seen this, the RBI Club sent out this e-mail earlier today, which includes a recap of the 2023 season and 2024 preview from Coach Cruz...

Greetings Rice Baseball Fans,

We hope this email finds you well and enjoying a pleasant holiday season. As our tremendous Rice Baseball student-athletes head home for a break, we have much to update you on as we prepare for their return in January, including a recap of 2023 and a look to 2024, as well as direction on how you can support the success of Rice Baseball through a gift to the RBI Club.

We are excited for year three under the leadership of Bixby Family Baseball Head Baseball Coach Jose Cruz, Jr. This season is our first in the American Athletic Conference, which resumes old rivalries against the likes of Tulane, Wichita State, and top squad ECU. Coach Cruz is also excited for another challenging non-conference schedule in which we’ll host defending national champs LSU, College World Series participant Stanford, and Notre Dame at Reckling Park while also traveling to Louisiana and Hawaii which renews an old WAC rivalry with the Fighting Rainbows. You can find the full schedule here.

For Rice Baseball to achieve our goal of excellence and return to national prominence, we need your continued support. From state-of-the-art technology to enhanced nutrition, and from facility upgrades to season ticket purchases, the RBI Club has always been a consistent means of support directly benefiting our student-athletes. On behalf of everyone associated with Rice Athletics and baseball, we thank you and encourage you to renew or make your gift to the RBI Club, and please spread the word to others!

Last year, the RBI Club raised nearly $200,000, an impressive show of support for what Coach Cruz is building at Reckling Park. This support enabled Coach to continue implementing his philosophy emphasizing student-athlete development in every phase of their lives. Key areas supported by RBI Club contributions included investments in a mental performance coach, technology (such as TruMedia for scouting and Hit Trax for training), enhanced team meals and daily nutrition aiding in performance and recovery, and facilities upgrades ensuring our student-athletes continue to train and compete in an excellent environment.

As you consider making a gift to the RBI Club, please note that we will have five donor levels available this year. The donor benefits associated with each level are as follows:

On behalf of our student-athletes, Coach Cruz and the RBI Board of Directors, we sincerely hope that you will consider making a gift to the RBI Club.

If you have any questions as you consider making a gift, please feel free to contact any member of our board or Senior Associate Athletics Director Tanner Gardner at (713) 348-8258.

2023 Rice Baseball Recap

In 2023, Rice Baseball returned to the postseason, as we hosted our final C-USA Championship at Reckling Park. Throughout the season, Parker Smith showcased his exceptional pitching skills, earning a spot on the All-CUSA first team and freshman Ben Royo led the team in home runs (13) and tacked on 40 RBIs, which was recognized by a spot on the All-Freshman team. The season's success continued even after the final pitch was thrown. In the MLB Draft, Justin Long, Matthew Linskey, and Hayden Durke were selected, making it the most Rice Owls to be chosen since 2019. The summer brought even more excitement as two Owls, Dane Myers and Tristan Gray, made their major league debuts, marking an unforgettable moment in their baseball careers.

Off the field, we also made great strides. Supporting our rigorous focus on player development, we continued our investment in technology, further refining our approach and adding key technologies including BATS (video analysis), Catapult (athlete load monitoring), and Zelus (baseball intelligence platform). The implementation of these state-of-the-art technologies was bolstered by our strengthened partnership with Rice’s Sports Management department and support from the department’s new Director of Applied Sports Science, John DeWitt . In the classroom, our Owls continued to excel. The team set a record for the highest all-time team GPA in both the fall (3.280) and spring (3.301), and the team was recently recognized in the NCAA Graduation Success Report with a graduation success rate of 100%!

2023 Fall Ball Recap

Last month, the team wrapped up a successful fall ball which created excitement for the 2024 season.

A number of players stuck out to Coach Cruz. On the mound, Parker Smith threw only one inning but quickly reminded why he earned All-Conference Honors last spring, striking out the side. Jack Ben-Shoshan set a personal record in velocity (94mph) and is competing for the closer role. Mauricio Rodriguez (who did not allow a run in the fall), Davion Hickson, and Tyler Hamilton all stood out as potential impact players. Finally, newcomers Karl Ralamb and Jackson Blank impressed and will be counted on this spring. At the plate, Kyte McDonald wowed by hitting .474 with 6 stolen bases while also displaying veteran leadership. Manny Garza hit .313 while displaying good form behind the plate (note he was rated the 5th best defensive catcher in the country for 2023!). Jack Riedel had a great fall, hitting .341 with three homers and held down 2B. Other standouts included Guy Garibay (4 home runs) and Ben Royo, Nathan Becker, and Trey Duffield, who all hit 3 home runs.

When the team returns in January, they’ll quickly start preparation for the exciting schedule ahead, and they look forward to seeing you in the stands to cheer them on!

RE: Rice Baseball Fall Ball 2023
AAC coaches pick Rice 8th in their preseason poll, ahead of only Tulane and UAB. While I am not particularly optimistic about the coming season-- and won't be until we can demonstrate that we have more than 2 serviceable pitchers (Smith, McCracken), I hope we do better than that in Cheito's 3rd season at the helm...

https://twitter.com/American_Conf/status...4079373627

BTW, wasn't Tulane an NCAA post-season team just a couple years ago? Strange that the Green Wave is picked so low, especially considering the coaches picked Tulane's Teo Banks as preseason AAC POY.

Not surprising, Parker Smith is the only Rice player on the preseason all-AAC team, though I think if they can build on their 2023 performance, Royo, Reidel and Garza all have a chance to crack the list by seasons-end...

lol, especially given that Royo wasn't even born in 2003, and Garza was one years old.

Any word of how Tucker Alch did in Fall Ball? He's a good kid I've known since he was in elementary school. Thanks.

Well, I have it on good authority that Garza was able to throw his rattle at 93 mph, so I'm expecting to see improvement on that.

Hopefully eyewitnesses can reply ... but Alch was mentioned 5 times in this Fall Ball site: https://rubpa.rice.edu/seasons/2021/2024-fall-ball ... that indicated Alch pitched in the Oct. 6, 13, & 20 scrimmages and both exhibition games (vs. Houston Christian/Oct. 27 & McClennen JC/Nov. 3)

He was not mentioned, however, in the short Rice news stories about the exhibitions: https://riceowls.com/news/2023/10/27/bas...n-over-hcu and https://riceowls.com/news/2023/11/3/base...exhibition

From Roger Tower's Fall Ball recaps of the other games (https://rubpa.rice.edu/seasons/2022/2023...ll-tower):

Oct. 6:
Quote:Home squad won 5-3 in 4 innings.

With a three run rally in the bottom of the fourth inning the home squad won today's scrimmage. ...

In the bottom of the fourth L. West reached on an infield throwing error. Vaszquez walked. The runners advanced on a wild pitch.

Two strikeouts followed. Cumming singled to left to score the two runners. McDonald followed with a double to right. This was his third hit of the day. Cumming scored. McDonald was out at third. That ended the scrimmage.

Pitchers for Visitors were Urbanczyk, Perkins, Hickson and Alch.

Did Alch pitch the entire B4?

- - - -

Oct. 13:

Quote:Today the pitchers were throwing all off speed pitches. Each inning began with an inherited runner (hereafter IR) on first base.

Rodriguez, Urbanczyk, Alch and Hickson for the Home team. ...

Visitors failed to score in the third. There were no hits, a fielder's choice, a pick-off and a SO. Alch pitched.

It looks like Alch faced just 2 batters to get the 3 outs.

- - - -

Oct. 20:

Quote:The scrimmage was played with competitive situations again.

Each squad faced inherited runners (IRs) on third base to begin 8 innings.

Of those IRs, 6 scored for the visiting squad and 7 scored for the home team.

Away scoring line 0-1-4-0-1-2-1-4-0=13
Home scoring line 2-1-2-4-0-2-4-4=19 ...

Pitching Highlights:
Away: Matthews: no runs; Alch:1K; Paul Smith: 3K, no Non-IR runs; Urbanczyk: 3K; Perkins: 2K

All pitchers pitched 2 innings except Matthews.

Did Alch pitch B2 & B3?

2025 scheduling news - we are going to be playing in the inaugural Puerto Rico college baseball challenge tournament, which will be Feb. 13-16 in Ponce and Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

Not an elite field, but not an awful field either. Rice, Virginia, Missouri, Michigan, UConn, Penn State, Stetson and Villanova.

Sounds like a fun roadtrip to start the season. Bring on the Pina Coladas! Not a bad field at all-- Penn State and Villanova (hopefully, not us) are the only duds. UVA and UConn are usually Top 25 caliber, and Michigan and Stetson usually make the post-season. Mizzou is supposed to be Top 50 this year.

UVA / UConn / Missouri would be fun. Watch us get stuck with Stetson and Villanova.

Coaching staff "additions" (and replacement for Janish) finally anounced...

https://riceowls.com/news/2024/1/18/base...-additions

Noteworthy, we've now joined the ranks with 3 assistant coaches (along with the volunteer coach); something the NCAA approved a year ago. I think Jose has taken over recruiting responsibilities.

Translation: we couldn't get anyone else for asst coaches, so Cruz had to promote people a month before the season started. Also, the Puerto Rico Classic announcement leads me to believe Cruz will be back for 2025 regardless of what happens this season.

I think you are spot on. I also believe Jose had already taken the recruiting away from Janish. I also do not think playing in PR should have ANY bearing on Cruz status after the season. We have a new AD from a very successful baseball university and I hope he evaluates on performance vs "he has a personal attachment to PR". I suspect the AD will utilize stats of the players that have been in the program under Cruz and see how they have developed (ie. Tim Corbin model). If he feels that the trend is down he should make a change. If he sees development and improvement he should not. I've looked at some of the numbers and the trend is, sadly, the former for most.

It seems strange we are promoting coaches from a disastrous season.
