WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - After extending its season-opening winning streak to four games with an impressive 28-3 victory against Maine on Saturday at Zable Stadium, the No.4/5 William & Mary football team was selected as the FedEx Ground FCS National Team of the Week.

En route to securing the lopsided conference victory, W&M's defense held Maine to just 138 total yards and a field goal. It marked the third consecutive game in which the Tribe's defense did not allow an offensive touchdown, as the unit has held opponents to just 123.6 total yards per game during the impressive three-game stretch.

W&M's offense was equally dominant on the ground and rushed for 331 yards, which included three rushing touchdowns. The Tribe scored touchdowns on all four of its trips into the red zone.

With the win, W&M improved to 4-0 and is off to its best start since 2009 when it also opened the year with four consecutive victories. Additionally, the Tribe has won a school-record nine consecutive CAA games and 11 straight regular season contests. The triumph also extended W&M's home winning streak to six games.

This is from the same group who moved Idaho from #7 to leapfrog us into #4 based on Idaho beating previous #4 Sacramento State. In fact, it would make sense that Idaho should be the team of the week for breaking the three major Sac. St. streaks (Big Sky winning streak, regular season winning streak, and road winning streak).

In other words, it is hard to take any of this too seriously. Based on its actions, it seems apparent that the cartel behind the Stats poll is intent on having Big Sky (and, of course, MVFC) presence at the top of the polls, at the expense of the non-ESPN-affiliated CAA.

All I know is that we should be 4-0 right now, and none of the games were really close. It's funny how we figure out how to complain about things now that we've got a good program in place and the coaching staff is extended. We could only have dreamed about this four years ago.

We saw last year what a difference it makes whether you are hosting a playoff game or going to Montana. You can't just pay attention to this stuff in the last couple weeks of the season. Movements and slights that happen early can still have a major effect at the end of the year.

I'm sure as heck not thinking about how bad we were four years ago. I'm hoping that this team can make hay while the sun shines now. The best hay is to be made at home. Anyone with true national championship aspirations knows that. Never too soon to worry.
