Navy was in the original invites in 2011 and signed the membership agreement with the Big East 24 January 2012.

As I recall, part of the Big East’s trouble is that they HAD to have an 8th football school for the 2012 season and no one was willing to to pay C-USA or the MWC extra to make that happen. Temple was able to bail on MAC football on short notice so theh got the nod. This would have put them at 13 for football so a 14th would ultimately be needed—probably BYU/AFA/Fresno St:

FB EAST: UConn, Temple, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Louisville, USF, UCF
FB WEST: Navy*, Memphis, Houston, SMU, Boise St*, San Diego St*, AFA/BYU/Fresno St*
