Dodd: Ex-Buffs QB among players stuck in limbo by flawed NCAA waiver process
The NCAA's waiver rules have become more restrictive despite coaches wielding more power than ever while pushing out players

Excellent reporting here by Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports on the plight of former Colorado and current Miami University quarterback Maddox Kopp.

"...At issue are players who opt to transfer a second time as undergraduates. Such waivers allowing players to see the field immediately are now only granted amid "exigent circumstances," according to the NCAA. In other words, issues outside of an athlete's control that require a player's "immediate departure." The new waiver interpretation did away with "lack of playing time" and even "academic preferences" as reasons to grant second waivers.

You're reading that right. As part of this new transfer world, the NCAA essentially rubber stamped a coach's ability to run off players who weren't good enough without necessarily giving those players a fair opportunity to play elsewhere immediately. Previous transfer rules made it easier to transfer if players were run off...."

I understand wanting to get some control over multiple transfers, but they made an overcorrection with the new rules. They at least need to allow unrestricted transfers for head coach changes. I thought that was easily the worst thing to restrict.

So UND is waiting to hear back about a transfer waiver for a guy who transferred to JMU for a year and then transferred back to UND, his initial school. Is there any leeway if there isn't a third school and a player goes back to where he started?

Also, why the hell can't they figure out a way for players to file a transfer waiver request AND GET A RESULT before they enter the portal? Also cannot understand how the process takes so long if they are just going to deny almost everyone.

The old rules led to basically 100% approval for a 2nd transfer waiver. The new rules are close to 0%. It's uncomfortable for the current crop, but going forward, people will at least know where they stand.

It's important to allow players 20 years of eligibility, amazing that they still can't graduate in 2 decades.

The portal is a dumpster fire of problems.

But regular students can transfer and go play in the band at their new school. And it used to be there was no waiting period for non-revenue sports. Makes this hard to justify.
