Week 1
1. Troy - took care of business (LW 1)
2. JMU - looked like they are still trying to figure things out and still won easily (LW 4)
3. GS - Controlled the game over an overmatched SoCon team (LW t5)
4. Louisiana - took care of business (LW t5)
t5. App St - pulled away in the 4th, defense needs time (LW 8)
t5. USM - solid performance for season opener (LW 9)
t7. Marshall - struggled more than they should have (LW 4)
t7. Texas St - Biggest win of the week. That D looks vicious (LW12)
t7. GSU - after other teams struggled that Rhode Island win now looks solid (LW 8)
10. Coastal - McCall with more INT than TD, not convinced they are tops in the East. (LW t5)
11. ULM - won a close game against a struggling Army team (LW 13)
12. USA - Tulane may be for real like last year but USA didn't look like a top 2 SBC (LW 2)
13. ODU - making strides (LW 14)
14. stAte - what did I just watch? (LW 11)
If you don't have Texas State number one then this is kind of ridiculous don't you think?
It's the first week of actual data. The prior week shouldn't really take any consideration in my opinion.
It's one week ... ODU beat Va. Tech in week one last year and won one game the rest of the year.
App State also beat #6 Texas A&M. App State did not go bowling.
App got the College Gameday curse.
I know a lot of people are selling App right now but the fact of the matter is that App has "struggled" against any decent FCS team going back to 2019. In 2019 App played ETSU and was up 14-7 at halftime, the next week they played UNCC and gave up 41 points, then they went an beat UNC and USC later on, going 13-1. In 2021 App played Elon and that game was a struggle with App carrying a small lead into halftime. This year they played Gardner-Webb pretty close.
But it was Week 1 against an FCS team with three All-Americans on defense, an All-American candidate on offense at running back, and a coach who knows App's offense and defense pretty well. When Aguilar went in the game with 2:30 left in the 2nd quarter, App scored on 5 of 6 drives, had more touchdown passes than incompletions, forced three turnovers, hit the QB probably more than 5 times, and just dominated save for one play where tackles were missed (week one issue).
People can look at the box score and draw conclusions but I'd recommend going back and watching the game.
As for who will win the conference this year, or divisions. I think Texas State has to be considered the front runner in the West so long as Finley stays healthy. Texas State looked like the P5 team against Baylor and that's saying something. They dominated from beginning to end, very much like App did against Texas A&M last year.
For the East, I think there are five realistic options but QB play is an issue throughout the division aside from Coastal. I think Coastal has to be considered the favorite followed by App, JMU, Marshall, and Georgia Southern in no particular order.
That said, my personal power rankings are not based on how a team did last week. It's based on what I see the end of the year looking like.
