RE: Interesting
Interesting concept and would probably draw interest for CFB across the board.

You’d have to start paying players and let them collectively bargain. Then you could agree upon spending caps, player transfers, buying out contracts, etc.

It’d be fun to watch but I don’t see it happening in the current environment but it’d make races to the top and from the bottom fun to watch.

Promotion/relegation, what a novel concept. Wish that had been brought up on this board before……. 01-wingedeagle We’ve been screaming this for a few years now, this is not a new concept.

RE: Interesting
This is exactly the setup of the English Football League. Having recently actually found an EFL team rooting interest to stick, I think this is a perfect setup from a fan perspective.

But there's the risk of relegation for large programs and the negative consequences of that, so those programs already there will never voluntarily enact this. It would be a different matter if this structure were forced upon the sports world, or this structure was in place before the money became too significant like it did in England.

RE: Interesting
Lol how did WKU and Air Force get put in league 1?

Overall though, yeah some kind of promotion/relegation could definitely be cool and has been talked about a lot. This certainly isn't anywhere close to my favorite format I've seen of it. 16 teams at the top playing all season to then get in to a 12 team playoff for the national championship? No thanks.

That's where the promotion/relegation does fail in its format - Tulane would not be in the Championship at this point because based on their last 20 years, they likely would have been in the regional leagues or League 2 at best last season. A Cinderella story only wins your current league, but never gets credit for achieving more than its current status outside of non-league player.

never going to happen. No P5 team would voluntarily vote for a potential relegation from their "Golden Rule" status. He who has the gold, makes the rules.....

I guess the key would be to make it worthwhile for the P5 schools that would largely be safe from relegation, or pretty sure to rebound quickly. Maybe if enough money is there, the FSUs can overrule the Wake Forests.

I love the idea of promotion and relegation...shame there would be so many hurdles to implementing it...

RE: Interesting
We have playoffs in America. They have promotion/relegation in Europe. All these scenarios also involve a playoff, but they really shouldn't. You can't have 12 team playoffs to determine who gets promoted or relegated in 16-20 team leagues. That's just silly.

Interesting in so far as it highlights the cultural gap between the US and Europe. They love complex hierarchy.

This is their government for example.
