If I need to look up an article in a journal that I don't personally subscribe to, I use the library data base, accessing it from my home computer, so that is useful to me.

But as far as going in to the library building itself, I just almost never do that. Maybe I am missing out and just don't know it, but I don't.

Not saying that my experience is typical, I am sure there are researchers and students who go to our library, but if the physical building closed I would not personally miss it in terms of my work on campus as faculty.

While I - like I think many do - do a lot of researching online, I find that time spent in a library is invaluable.

For all the work of project Gutenberg and many others, I find that a good library just has resources in text (or archives in filmstrip, microfiche, etc), that I just don't find online.

(I'd like a nickel everytime someone I know has told me that "You broke the internet", because I mentioned something that they tried to look up but it did not exist online. But we found when going to the library lol)

Plus I have found that a library is quite possibly the best study place I've ever found. And that's been in school life and beyond.

So while I can understand a bit of a draw down, I think that cutting library spending and personnel is a mistake.

But then, as I remember back even in elementary school - when a school is looking to cut a budget, it always seems to be the library that goes first...

Note: In case anyone tries to find my post you replied to, I deleted that post before I saw that you replied to it.

But as to your reply here, maybe I do need to give our library a visit. I may well be missing out on some good research resources.

I do know that when I was a college student, I did often go to the library to study. This was decades ago, but I have fond memories of doing that.

My apologies. I didn't see that you had deleted it.

And in re-reading, maybe I should clarify that my comments were not directed towards you or your choices. Just that it makes me unhappy to see libraries cut.

Thanks, but no need, all you did was reply to the message, I wish I had seen that before i deleted. It was just something that happened in transit in cyber-space, LOL.

Also, FWIW I didn't read your post as being directed at me or my choices, I read it as your POV on the issue, which I appreciated. And FWIW, even though I don't use it much, I don't like seeing libraries cut either, because some do use them.

04-cheers

I remember during Hell Week, we all would hide in the library in between classes so the Seniors couldn't find us. A&M has a REALLY big library, plenty of places there to hide whole schools of fish... I did enjoy spending time there when I was older, it was nice once the fear of seeing a Zip with an Attitude was gone.
