Wrote this earlier this summer about Joe Webb's boxing career. His first pro fight is set for August 5 at Bartow Arena. Looking forward to this one.

At Bartow now waiting for the fights to start. Not a lot of folks here to support Joe. That’s a shame! This probably wasn’t advertise well, but I expected more Blazertalkers to attend at least.
Boxing is a dying sport. I’m not a fan of a sport where the purpose is literally to knock the other person out. I wish Joe the best, but I have zero desire to see it.

I grew up in the 1970s/1980s and would follow boxing as far as the big names went. The champs were all household names at the time and with just two sanctioning bodies it was easier to keep up. Plus a lot of fights were on regular TV.
But I couldn’t name one active champ right now off the top of my head. I did attend Wilder’s first defense but that was more of a bucket list kind of thing to see a heavyweight title fight.
Yes, it is a brutal sport but those involved know what they’re getting into. It’s more of a sport than horse racing or dog racing. At least dog racing seems to be dying a natural death in this country.
As for Webb, I doubt he sees himself as the next Ali. He’s just missing the physicality of football and trying to satisfy that. I’d suggest he go get a real job (even coaching football) but he didn’t ask me.

Joe Webb and Ryan King had different styles, but it was a competitive evenly matched bout. It was a fair decision by the judges.
A very fun night - glad I went. Hopefully they’ll schedule some more boxing at Bartow.
