Texas is a very weird place. There will always be people in Texas who just want to play other Texas schools. Not enough people leave the state for college there, and they all end up becoming college rivals with most of their friends.

Y’all just feel this way because you think that us Texans all think that we are better and above the rest of you 49 born staters. (We do and we are).

But yeah because why pay out of state tuition? Lots of options instate. And sometimes the closest out of state university is 6 hours away. Texas football is its own cult so yeah it helps build prestige playing/beating other Texas universities.

The risk with Texas coming together is no one outside of Texas cares. It's difficult to build a national brand in a sandbox.

Playing against UT, Texas A&M, UTSA, UNT - can understand the appeal.

SHSU, and the schools they seem to want to add/play like SFA and Tarleton make little sense to me. Feels like playing the local high school team for bragging rights. I don't get the prestige there.

There isn’t prestige there. Just lots of history with SHSU. Playing then in a buy game in NRG is cool, but not in Huntsville. No desire to share conference with them or any of the potential fcs call ups.

What if we add one school from Arkansas? That should do the trick right? We’ll call it the SWC

. . . and IF we had this Conference called The SWC, would any of the teams from TEXAS be able to build a National Brand ?

To be fair probably not many fans even on this board outside of Georgia Southern fans had probably heard of TXST prior to 2012. And Barrick Nealy and 11/26/05 is the only reason GS would have known.

I had. I remember well when the plucky Texas State Armadillos lead by coach Ed “Straight Arrow” Gennero, a 30 year old QB Paul Blake and a girl kicker took down the by God #1 Texas Colts in 1991.

Seriously…change your mascot to the Armadillos. Bobcats is as dull as an old penny.

If you really think you are "cool Marshall fans", you should totally follow APPdiesel's advice and change your colors to kelly green! Then, you might be mistaken as "cool Marshall fans"...

... or you can just put on a Marshall shirt and turn your thermostat down to 60 degrees, then you could properly think of yourself as a cool Marshall fan!!!!

Perhaps forgotten to history, but when UTSA was being created (way back when) the students were polled via a campus-wide vote what they wanted to adopt as the school’s sports mascot. The UTSA student body voted overwhelmingly to call their teams the “Armadillos”….but the administration and UT system nixed that, and overroad the student vote to install the “Roadrunners” as UTSA’s mascot.

I think Armadillos would be (or would have been) a completely good school mascot, but I’m guessing at that time the identity or association with “Armadillos” was considered to be too counter-culture, and related to hippie/drugs and music (ala the now defunct Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin).

Those were the days . . . “Straight Arrow” Gennero, Blake, Stone Hands and Company.

You know, we actually lost a game to a girl kicker once . . . you can’t make this shite up.

You just did....LOL.....dude, get real, we got blown out 72-8 by New Mexico in 2003, the female kicker, by making 2 PATs became the first female to score in a FBS game.

You make it sound like she kicked a winning FG or PAT to win the game. I was actually at the game and cringed every time Mad Manny went for it on 4th down, sometimes even on our own 20, what a joke of a coach.

We lost a game in which a female kicker played and set a record, her 2 points did not win the game...

Well I'd argue that most pitiful day in human history had much to do with why TXST is here. And why it took GS so long to get here. Armadillo is the perfect name for TXST.

Not sure where you got your information, but I think you're just a little off. My understanding is that in the first election (1977), Armadillos and Stars were the two finalists, and set to move on to a final vote. I've never read anywhere though that the Armadillo vote was overwhelming.

The final vote between those two never took place though because the Student Representative Assembly declared that first election void. While I've never been able to find out the reason for that, I've never come across anything about the UT System playing a part in any of it. At any rate, in the new election, the Armadillo and Roadrunner were the new finalists, and the Roadrunner won out.

Okay, you people think its cool. The rest of us just think its nuts.

He is right you know.

As someone who didn't grow up in Texas, but moved here from Germany, I can't say with certainty how many here would just like to play other Texas schools, but I definitely don't think it's the majority. For those who do feel that way though, I can't help but wonder if geography plays some part in that.

Texas is HUGE. With an area of nearly 269K square miles, it's basically the size of the next FIVE largest states in the Sun Belt combined (Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, and North Carolina) which all range anywhere from about 52K to 59K square miles. I know we have airports these days, but a lot of people still prefer to drive to football games, if possible. And with those kinds of distances, I can see how some wouldn't be big fans of regularly playing schools in other states when the one they live in already encompasses such great distances. The Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex alone is about 9.2K square miles, which is over 1/3 the area of West Virginia, and nearly 1/3 the area of South Carolina.

Its a uniquely Texas problem.

Problem ? Who the hell said it was a problem?

To illustrate your point, West Viriginia is...
24,230 square miles

Off topic, but I noticed that you're in Danbury, Texas. I taught 7th grade math there for 6 years, from 1995-2000 if I recall correctly. Also coached middle school football, basketball, and track. It was actually where I began my teaching career. Good memories.
